SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Thomas McGrath Papers dates from 1953-1991, and contains the poems “A Visit to the House of the Poet,” by Thomas McGrath, “Alabanza para Thomas McGrath,” by Sergio Ramirez, and “Homage al Gran Poeta Tom McGrath,” by Fernando Silva. It also contains correspondence to Alice McGrath from various people and newspaper clippings pertaining to Thomas McGrath.

Also included are photocopies of reports from the United States Department of Justice pertaining to their pursuit and investigation of Thomas McGrath in 1953 regarding his supposed involvement in the communist party. These reports tell of how the Department of Justice attempted to make contact with McGrath by sending an agent that he went to college with and arranging for them to have a meeting where they could discuss political issues. McGrath however, refused to make any sort of arrangement. Attempts to arrange a meeting continued for some time, but McGrath never agreed to them. In spite of the lack of a meeting, it was determined by the Department of Justice that both McGrath and his wife Alice were Communists.
