INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: The records of the Grand Forks Chapter of the North Dakota Audubon Society were placed in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection on permanent loan by Robert Lewis, December 1984 (Acc #84-1340); as a gift of Sharon Lambeth of Grand Forks, October 1985 (Acc #85-1413, Acc #85-1421); were removed from the Neil Weber Papers before processing (Acc #87-1571); as a gift of Marlene Stiles, January 16, 1989 (Acc #89-1637). Newsletters of the Fargo - Moorhead Audubon Society found in the Acquisitions Department of the Chester Fritz Library; March 1996.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

The development of the Grand Forks Chapter of the North Dakota Audubon Society was initiated by Kenneth Sherwood in his letter to the National Audubon Society in 1970. The Grand Forks Chapter was granted a Provisional Chapter Charter by the National Audubon Society on March 1, 1971, and received the Chapter Charter on March 1, 1973. The purpose of the Audubon Society is to promote understanding and appreciation of the necessity for a quality environment which is essential for the survival and well-being of all species of life.

The Grand Forks Chapter of the North Dakota Audubon Society Papers contains only the first bulletin of the Grand Forks Audubon Society which was organized on November 22, 1902. O.G. Libby was the first President. This collection does not include any other material to document this first organization.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collections # 358 and # 997 have been consolidated to form the records of the Grand Forks Chapter of the North Dakota Audubon Society, which consists of correspondence, minutes, membership lists, and newsletters from 1971 to 1988. Much of the correspondence from 1973 to 1976 is concerned with the expansion of the Garrison Diversion Project in North Dakota. This collection contains the Provisional Charter (1 MAR 1971) and the Chapter Charter (1 MAR 1973). Also included are correspondence and minutes of the North Dakota Audubon Council, 1972-1978, correspondence and newsletters of the National Audubon Society, 1971-1983, and State and National issues concerning the Audubon Society, 1972-1982. During processing the collection was arranged into seven series. A brief description of each series follows.

SERIES I: Governing Documents/Administrative Records
This series contains Governing Documents/Administrative Records that consists of charters, constitution and by laws, minutes, land membership lists. These are arranged chronologically. Box 1, Folder 1 - Box 1, Folder 8

SERIES II: Correspondence
This series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence to and from the Audubon Society. The Letters are arranged chronologically within each folder. Box 1, Folder 9 - Box 1, Folder 16

SERIES III: Finances
This series consist of finances. Box 1, Folder 17

SERIES IV: State and National Issues
This series consists of pamphlets and letters that originated at the state or national level. Box 1, Folder 18 - Box 1, Folder 21

SERIES V: News clippings
This series consists of News clippings from various newspapers. It also contains the News clippings from the Garrison Diversion and clip arts. Box 1, Folder 22 - Box 1, Folder 24

SERIES VI: Miscellaneous
This series consists of a list of all the National Audubon Society Chapters and what state they are in. It also contains letters to congressmen. Box 2, Folder 1

SERIES VII: Publications
This series consists of the monthly newsletters that were published by the Grand Forks Audubon Society from 1971 to 1988. They are arranged in chronological order. Also included are newsletters of the Fargo - Moorhead Audubon Society from March to November 1973. Box 2, Folder 2 - Box 2, Folder 22
