The addition to the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Records is divided into six series.
Series I: Governing Documents
This series contains brief histories of the Symphony written by Ruth and Ben
Gustafson describing Symphony activity until 1974. Also included are the
amended By-laws of 1967, 1977, 1978 and 1983. The By-laws were amended in 1967
to reflect what had been informally in effect since 1959; in 1977 in order to
receive an IRS tax-exempt status; in 1978 to allow the Board of Directors the
power to appoint an Advisory Committee for the purpose of implementing policy;
and, in 1983 in order to reorganize the structure of the Symphony Association.
Box 1, Folder 2 - Box 1, Folder 8
Series II: Membership
This series consists of membership information. Included are listings of
orchestra personnel, 1969-1982; members of the Board of Directors, 1962-1987;
Citizens Committee, 1967-1983; and the Board of Trustees, 1983-1987. Newspaper
clippings and correspondence provide a limited amount of biographical
information about the Symphony's conductors, 1971-1983. Material describing
Haesle's tenure as conductor can be located with the Leo M. Haesle Fund
scholarship records. Box 1, Folder 9 - Box 1, Folder 24
Series III: Minutes of Meetings
This series contains the minutes of meetings of the Board of Directors,
1950-1987, which describe concert programming and the appearance of guest
artists, rehearsal schedules and attendance, remuneration to conductors and
orchestra personnel, publicity, concert attendance, and fund raising. The
minutes of Citizens Committee meetings date from 1961-1983. Records from the
1950s were not included in this addition. The minutes deal primarily with the
Committee's responsibility for fund raising. Their largest fund-raiser from
1960 to 1982 was the annual Symphony Ball held with a varying degree of
success. The minutes of the Board of Trustees, 1983-1987 reflect the changed
organizational make-up of the Symphony Association and delineate the
functioning of the various appointed committees. Series III also contains a
small amount of correspondence. Box 1, Folder 25 - Box 2, Folder 4
Series IV: Artists and Programming
This series contains concert programs, 1942-1988, which describe not only
concert selections, but also list orchestra personnel and symphony sponsors and
contributors. Also included are small posters advertising concerts, and
newspaper clippings. Box 2, Folder 5 - Box 3, Folder 11
Series V: Financial
This series documents the financial picture of the Symphony through annual or
monthly treasurer's reports and annual budgets, 1961-1987. Fund-raising records
list symphony memberships and contributions and describe projects such as the
Symphony Ball, house tours, art auction, raffles, cocktail parties, High tea,
bridge luncheons, and the Harvest Hoe-Down. Grant records date primarily from
the 1970's and 1980's. Grants provided an important source of funding for the
Symphony. Major grantors were Dayton-Hudson, the Myra Foundation, Burlington
Northern, and the North Dakota Council on the Arts. Box 3, Folder 12 - Box
5, Folder 32
Series VI: Miscellaneous
This series contains miscellaneous information which describes the activity of
other North Dakota orchestras, Minot, Bismarck, and Fargo-Moorhead and North
Dakota and national arts and symphony associations, 1970-1986. Box 6, Folder
1 - Box 6, Folder 15
Oversize materials were placed on the shelves adjacent to the collection. These materials include financial ledgers, 1969-1973, and scrapbooks of news clippings, programs, and publicity dating from 1954-1987.
