Genealogical Manuscript Collections

The use of any manuscript collection as a genealogical resource is often appropriate, especially if the collection provides a significant association with a particular ancestor. The Department of Special Collections houses a number of manuscript collections that offer broader genealogical searching opportunities. Church and school records, for instance, or collections that contain biographical or other information for a number of individuals. These collections are listed below with links to their inventories.

American Lutheran Church Records, North Dakota: 1871-1979; Congregational and council minutes as well as ministerial records for 333 congregations in 209 cities and towns in North Dakota affiliated with the American Lutheran Church.

Cecil C. Mahon Papers: 146 page scrapbook of newspaper clippings from the Cavalier County Republican and Courier Democrat regarding the pioneer settlers of Cavalier County

North Dakota Depression Interviews Collection

Northern Interscholastic Press Association Records: Contains high school yearbooks from North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota

Pembina County Pioneer Daughters: Documents the history of early Pembina County settlers and the development of local communities

Records of the Royal Norwegian Consulate General: 1922-1968; the primary responsibility of this Norwegian governmental agency was to assist Norwegian heirs in the disposition of personal estates

Ships’ Passenger Lists, Miscellaneous Ports: 16 rolls of microfilm purchased from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Lists are from smaller ports on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, as well as ports on the Great Lakes
