SIOUX LOGO AND NICKNAME COLLECTION

INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION:  The Sioux Logo and Nickname Collection was created by the Department of Special Collections to aid researchers examining the history of the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux logo and nickname.  The collection is added to on a regular basis.

ACCESS:  Available for inspection under the Rules and Regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Sioux Logo and Nickname Collection dates from 1902 to the present, and has been divided into six series as follows:

Series I:  Newspaper Articles
The first series consists of newspaper reports, letters to the editor, and editorials, beginning in 1930.  The majority of the articles are from regional newspapers, with the Grand Forks Herald being the most prevalent.  The folders have been arranged in chronological order.  Researchers should note that the collection does not contain every single instance the logo and nickname have been reported in print.

Series II:  Books/Journals/Magazines
The second series contains various books, journals, and magazines, and has been arranged in alphabetical order by the last name of the author.

Series III:  Other Media
The third series consists of the transcript from an ESPN Outside the Lines program, entitled “Honor or Shame?” which aired on 11 March 2001.  Also included is the transcript of an ESPN moderated chat with UND Athletic Director Roger Thomas from 12 March 2001.  The actual program was recorded and can be viewed in Special Collections.   

Series IV:  University of North Dakota Material
The fourth series contains various materials originating from the University of North Dakota.  The folders have been arranged in chronological order.

Series V:  Native American Perspective
The fifth series contains materials which document the perspective of Native Americans in regards to the logo and nickname.  The folders have been arranged in chronological order.

 Series VI:  Miscellaneous Material
The final series contains miscellaneous materials related to Ralph Engelstad, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, and Lawrence Welk, who was inducted into the Standing Rock Tribe in 1965.
