SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Center for Teaching and Learning, Dean Vito Perrone Records contains general correspondence, 1968-1984, reports concerning the operation of the Center for Teaching and Learning and the outreach programs that Perrone and CTL helped initiate or evaluate. Materials from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), Mid- Continent Regional Education Laboratory (McREL), National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are included. Perrone was a member and consultant to these organizations. Also found are miscellaneous materials from the many organizations and agencies that Perrone and CTL were associated, including Governor's Task Force, Governor's Conference on Public Education, Manitoba Project, Rocky Mountain Teachers Corps Network, and the Northern Plains Teachers Corps Network.

The correspondence covers a wide variety of topics, including, curriculum development in New School, legislative concerns about education, continuing education for teachers, inter- departmental concerns at UND, and requests for information or admission to the New School. Perrone was involved in the development of the New School and its amalgamation with the College of Education to form the Center for Teaching and Learning. Perrone was a pioneer in the "open classroom" movement in the United States. He and his colleagues from around the country developed a new form of education, patterned after the Infant Schools of Great Britain. There is a great deal of correspondence between Perrone and educators in Great Britain and Canada concerning new methods of education that were being developed in the New School. There are many requests for admission to the New School for Master's, Doctoral, and Post-Doctoral work. These requests came from as far away as Australia and Africa. Educators from around the world were requesting employment information for openings to the faculty of the New School. The inter-departmental correspondence gives a good picture of the conflicts surrounding the development of a new and unique form of teacher education. The New School and Graduate School, at times, were at loggerheads about admissions procedures, grading policies, and the general philosophy of graduate education. Other departments were providing assistance and resources to help the New School accomplish its goals. Perrone's new ideas sometimes brought him into conflict with fellow educators, including his mentor at Michigan State University, Herbert Rudman. Innovative teaching techniques, continuing education, faculty-community relationship within the schools, and parent involvement were some of the new concepts proposed by Perrone. The records provide an excellent view into a program that was to produce better educated and more motivated teachers for local schools.

The materials were received in a partially organized fashion. The correspondence was divided between an alphabetical and chronological system. The alphabetical system covers the years 1968 through early 1974. The chronological system starts in 1973 and goes through July 1984. The collections of correspondence has been maintained in this form. The other materials were received in an unorganized manner and have been organized in an alphabetical form by subject.

An article by Perrone entitled "Barriers to Adventurous Teaching in the Humanities" that appeared in Teaching and Humanities vol. 1 no. 1, is included in Box 23, Folder 26.
