Faculty Seed Money Grant Recipients Announced
Congratulations are extended to the five recipients of Faculty Seed Money grants. This new program is intended to encourage highly innovative research that will result in new grant proposals to the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and other foundations and federal agencies. The Research Committee solicited and then a subgroup of the committee rigorously evaluated the 17 applications received. Many were felt to be highly meritorious, and, based on the recommendations of Dr. John Sladek and the subgroup, five grants were funded in amounts of roughly $30,000 each. The awardees and their proposals are the following:
- Lucia Carvelli, PhD, assistant professor, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Therapeutics—“Cloning and Functional Characterization of an Orphan Human Protein: A Potential Amphetamine Target.”
- Colin Combs, PhD, associate professor, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Therapeutics—“Intestinal Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease.”
- Matthew Nilles, PhD, associate professor, Microbiology and Immunology—“Immune Modulating Functions of Type III Secretion Needle Proteins.”
- Joyce Ohm, PhD, assistant professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology—“Establishing a Link between Sarcoma Translocation Fusion Proteins and Epigenomic Reprogramming.”
- Thad Rosenberger, PhD, associate professor, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Therapeutics—“Acetate Supplementation and Injury Progression in Rats Subjected to EAE.”
