SIL colloquium will feature Kevin Sparks June 28
Banker-linguist Kevin Sparks will speak at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28, in 300 Merrifield Hall on analysis of the US Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 from a linguistic perspective, examining the persuasive and often manipulative communication between bankers and politicians. From a Relevance Theoretic framework, he illustrates the cognitive and communicative forces at play in utterances aimed at multiple audiences.
Sparks holds a master's in linguistics from UND. He is an Associate at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ in New York City, where he works as an analyst covering the oil and gas sector.
