Frank White’s charity golf tournament attracts big names in UND hockey
When UND assistant professor of sociology Frank White considered holding a golf tournament as an annual event to raise money for student scholarships, he didn’t know what kind of response he’d get.
But with the first-ever Frank White-Roger Snortland Golf Tournament set for July 14 at the Walhalla (N.D.) Country Club, the list of participants now includes former UND hockey player Matt Greene, who earlier this month hoisted the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup trophy as assistant captain of the Los Angeles Kings. Greene’s father, Jim, will also attend.
Others scheduled to attend are UND hockey coach Dave Hakstol and as many as 10 University hockey alums. They are Jay Panzer (1995-1999), Andy Kollar (1998-2002), Andy Schneider (2001-2005), Nick Fuher (2001-2005), Lee Marvin (2002-2006), Robbie Bina (2003-2008), Matt Watkins (2005-2009), Chay Genoway (2006-2011), Jake Marto (2007-2011) and Brett Hextall (2008-2011).
“We’re really pleased with the response,” said White, who hopes to make the tournament an annual event that will include even more former UND athletes. “It seems like the tournament is already getting bigger and bigger. We’re still getting volunteers and sponsorships daily.”
White has a connection with all the former UND hockey players: they were either in his Introduction to Sociology class or his Sports Sociology class. Six years ago, that same connection brought then-Carolina Hurricanes defenseman and UND alum Mike Commodore to Grand Forks with the Stanley Cup. Commodore even brought the 45-pound trophy to one of White’s classes.
The tournament is named for Snortland, a longtime teacher in Langdon, N.D., and White, a Walhalla native. White said Snortland’s son, Chris, helped come up with the idea and is one of the organizers. All proceeds from the tournament will go to scholarships at UND and Mayville State University, which is White’s and Snortland’s alma mater.
The tournament includes a silent auction for sports memorabilia being donated by former UND athletes, including an autographed jersey from retired Minnesota Viking Jim Kleinsasser and a Los Angeles Kings jersey from Greene signed by the NHL champion Kings. Autographed jerseys have also been donated by Jonathan Toews, captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Genoway, a Minnesota Wild prospect who plays for the Houston Aeros.
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 13, with a social at Chizzy’s Bar in Leroy, N.D., approximately 12 miles east of Walhalla. The four-person, invitation-only scramble tournament will get under way at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Walhalla Country Club. A meal and raffle will be held after the tournament at Chizzy’s.
White has been teaching sociology classes at UND for 24 years and has been recognized in "Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” throughout his career at the University. In 2010, he became the second University faculty member to be immortalized as a “bobblehead.”
Recognitions White has received include: UND Foundation Award for Individual Excellence in Teaching; UND Foundation Award for Excellence in Academic Advising; Distinguished Alumni Award from Mayville State University; Bush Teaching Scholar; Access Champion for providing outstanding efforts to Students with Disabilities; Gamma Sigma Alpha Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching, Mentoring, and Service; Faculty Star from 2006-2010 by UND Presidential Scholar students; and last fall the University Faculty Service-Learning Award from the Center for Community Engagement.
