Update on College of Education and Human Development Dean Search

Summary update: At its most recent meeting, the EHD Dean Search Committee adopted a search timeline that includes review of applications in late September and campus interviews tentatively slated for early November. The Committee continues to strongly encourage nominations for the deanship (for more information, please see the position description posted on the EHD web site, at education.und.edu/dean-search/index.cfm). The Committee considered a number of factors in adopting this timeline, including appropriate coordination with the Provost Search Committee, general assessment of the current applicant pool, and the desirability of completing the search process in the fall semester. For those interested, a more detailed update follows.

Detailed update:

1. Search Timeline

August and September: Continued outreach and advertisement of position. Nominations are welcomed, and may be made directly to our search consultants, Katherine Haley and Mercedes C. Vance, at UNDDeanEHD@wittkieffer.com.

Sept. 25: Committee begins review of applications.

Oct. 8: Committee will meet to discuss applications and select candidates for screening interviews.

Oct. 23-24: Committee will conduct screening interviews via Skype to select finalists for campus interviews.

Nov. 4-15: Tentative dates for campus interviews of finalists.

2. Timeline Considerations

As noted above, the Committee considered a number of factors in adopting this timeline, including appropriate coordination with the Provost Search Committee, general assessment of the current applicant pool, and the desirability of completing the search process in the fall semester. (1) After seeking input from our search consultants and meeting with the Co-Chairs of the Provost Search Committee, we recommended to the Provost that the EHD Dean search continue as planned, with communication and coordination between the two search committees as both searches progress. (2) As of mid-August, 25 applications had been submitted. The advertisement for the position will be re-run in the Chronicle of Higher Education and our consultants will conduct another round of outreach in order to maximize the applicant pool prior to the Committee’s review in late September. (3) The original January 2012 charge to the Committee asked the Committee to implement a process consistent with a Summer 2012 start date; after retaining our consultants and mapping out a feasible timeline in February, we sought and received an extension on the target start date to allow review of the applicant pool and screening and campus interviews to occur in Fall 2012. (This extension was announced by the Provost in a March U-Letter.) It was our judgment, shared by the Committee, that an additional delay in filling the EHD Deanship may not best serve the needs of the College. The above timeline reflects the Committee’s commitment to fulfill the revised charge and complete the search process in Fall 2012.

3. Next Meeting

The next Committee meeting, to further develop and refine logistics for conducting the screening and campus interviews, is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in EHD, Room 300. The Committee also has tentatively scheduled a meeting at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in EHD, Room 347.
