Pair of events generate nearly 1,000 t-shirt donations for Grand Forks CVIC
UND student-athletes received nearly 1,000 donated t-shirts for the Grand Forks Community Violence and Intervention Center (CVIC), as well as $265.75 in financial contributions, with a pair of successful community service events last week.
UND’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) conducted a t-shirt drive from Oct. 18-31, and hosted a Halloween Bash for 5th-graders and younger on Oct. 31 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. Proceeds from both benefited the CVIC.
The UND SAAC t-shirt drive, conducted as part of a Big Sky Conference competition, generated 953 t-shirts in good condition.
One hundred and twenty-three UND student-athletes took part in the Halloween Bash, which raised $265.75 and an additional 76 t-shirts for the CVIC. Approximately 200 children attended the event with their parents or legal guardians and were able to participate in a variety of activities with their favorite UND student-athletes.
“The t-shirt drive was a huge success thanks in part of the support of the UND Alumni Association and Foundation and UND Greek Life. Both departments encouraged their members to donate, improving the success of the drive immensely,” said Stacy Bjorlie, UND Athletics Academic Services Coordinator. “We were also pleased to see that so many families chose to spend some of their time with our student-athletes at the Betty on Halloween. There are a lot of opportunities for kids to have a safe and fun Halloween in Grand Forks and we’re proud to have been able to provide one of those opportunities.”
UND Athletics would like to thank the following area business and organizations for the support of the UND SAAC Halloween Bash: Gate City Bank, Bremer Bank, Christus Rex and Sharon Lutheran Church, Northeast Human Service Center, and Nilles Law Firm.
The UND SAAC will conduct a door-to-door food drive from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 13. All items collected will be donated to the Grand Forks Mortar Board to fill baskets for their annual Turkey Basket Drive.
