Randy Magill named associate athletics director/CFO
Athletics Director Brian Faison has announced the hiring of Randy Magill as associate athletics director and chief financial officer (CFO). Magill’s first day at UND will be Dec. 10.
Magill will direct all business operations for UND Athletics and will develop administrative and fiscal strategies to meet the strategic goals of the athletics department within North Dakota University System (NDUS) and National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) guidelines. He will oversee all internal accounting, including property acquisition and control, bids, contract negotiations, cash receipts from sports, special events, facility usage, accounts payable and receivable, trade-out utilization, fund transfers and travel.
Magill, who possesses nearly 20 years of administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics, comes to UND after spending the past four years at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. While serving as senior associate athletics director for business affairs at UNC-Wilmington, Magill was responsible for comprehensive planning and management of the athletics department’s financial affairs, including its $10.5 million budget.
“Randy brings a unique blend of business and athletics administrative and coaching experience to this critical position,” said Faison.
During his tenure at UNC-Wilmington, Magill collaborated with the Vice-President for University Finance on financial planning and budgets and was involved in all facets of assessment planning and management of the athletic department’s financial affairs. He was also involved in the administration of UNC-Wilmington’s ticket office and Life Skills programs and was actively involved in human resources planning and all related financial affairs.
Prior to joining UNC-Wilmington, spent five years at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., where he began as assistant athletic director in 2003 before being elevated to associate athletic director. He was involved in all phases of CU’s athletic operations, including financial management, budgets and ticketing.
Magill’s other previous athletics administrative experience includes stints as commissioner of the Great South Athletic Conference (2002 to 2003) and athletics director at Wesleyan College (2002 to 2003) in Macon, Ga.
Magill also has previous ties to the University of North Dakota, having served as an assistant men’s basketball coach during the 1993-94 season. His extensive coaching background also includes stops as head women’s basketball coach at Ohio University-Chillicothe (1989 to 1993) and assistant women’s basketball coach at Ohio University-Chillicothe (1988-89) and South Alabama (1994-95).
“I am very excited for this opportunity with UND Athletics,” said Magill. “My wife and I are very impressed with the leadership of the department and we are really looking forward to becoming a part of it. Having worked here before, it has been nice to see the department transform itself over the past few years. I look forward to helping continue the progression further.”
Magill is a 1986 graduate of Ohio University-Chillicothe, where he received a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He also earned a master’s degree in management from LaSalle University in 1991 and a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 1994.
