Staff Senate is pleased to announce December U-Shine Award recipients  Jim Hanson, maintenance specialist, and Galen Gasink, systems mechanic.  They were nominated by Marcia Kelley, First Lady.  Both were presented with a check for $50, and a certificate by Staff Senate President Patricia Young.

This award is presented monthly to a staff member who went out of his or her way to make UND a better place.

Here is an excerpt of what was said about Jim and Galen:  “A young student was approaching the stop sign on Centennial Drive when a sudden snow squall hit.  Her motorcycle went out from under her, throwing her and her bike to the ground.  Passers-by helped get her motorcycle out of the street, but the bike was disabled by the fall and the student was hurt and unable to ride.

Jim Hanson and Galen Gasink helped her to call a friend with a pickup truck, waited with her until the truck arrived, helped push the disabled bike up into the bed of the truck, and found ropes to secure the bike.

Not only did they drop everything they were doing to help this student, but they were kind, gentle, and sympathetic with a student who was injured and stranded.  These two gentlemen prioritized the welfare of this student over their own agenda and really demonstrated that ‘students are the reason we are here at UND.’  They deserve the U-Shine award and thanks from all of us.”

All UND staff members are eligible to receive this award.  Nominations can be submitted through the Staff Senate web site at; nomination forms are also available at Facilities, Dining Services and the Memorial Union Post Office. Nominations must be received by the 15th of each month.
