Community Theatre has the cure for the winter blahs
Forty below wind chills. Snow storms almost weekly. The winter may have you climbing the walls. Maybe you need a reason to escape them – and your significant other. Well, the Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre is offering a smorgasbord of theatre workshops for you to try out. Executive Director Kathy Coudle-King insists that there’s no experience required. “We are offering these workshops because people have asked, ‘I’ve never acted, how do I get started?’ or they’ve commented on the wonderful work of a make-up artist, and said that they’d love to take a class from her. We started compiling of a list of classes and are fortunate to have excellent teachers available to run these one-day workshops. Because it is just one day, there isn’t a huge time or cost investment, and people can see if it’s something they want to do more of,” said Coudle-King.
While first-timers are encouraged to apply, these workshops might also be the refresher that an aspiring theatre artist or student getting ready for college auditions will find inspiring, too. Here’s the line-up:
Musical Theatre – Basic Dance & Acting Techniques with Casey Paradies, ages 12 – 18. $25. March 9, 11 – 1 p.m. You love musical theatre but maybe you could use some pointers on basic dance steps and acting. Allow Casey to teach you what he’s learned from performing in productions in college, off-Broadway, and summer stock. He’s been performing since he was just a tot, and while we would never reveal his age, let’s just say he has “considerable experience.”
Zombie and Stage Make-up with Prof. Michelle Davidson, ages 11-15. $30. March 9, 1 – 3 p.m. Michelle heads up the costume and make-up department at UND and will introduce best practices when creating make-up for the stage.
Intro to Playwriting with Matt Hegdahl, ages 11 - 16. $35. March 16, 1- 4 pm . Matt is pursuing an M.F.A. in playwriting from Univ. of Idaho – Moscow and is will teach you about character, dialogue, and structure. The group will get a chance to write either a monologue or a group play.
Monologue and Audition Prep with Amy Driscoll. 11 – 18. $25. March 23, 1-3.
Theatre Make-up, with Nikki Quam, 16 and older/$35, plus $20 make-up kit. March 23, 2-5 p.m. Amy grew up in EGF, performing on stage in various venues around the region, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in theatre arts from UND. She spends her summers working with children’s theatre in Bismarck’s Sleep Hollow theatre program.
Directing Workshop with Prof. Emily Cherry,18+/ $75. March 24th , 1 – 5 p.m. Emily is the director for the UND Muiscal Theatre program and is an accomplished director and actor. Recently, her UND Production, My Gen, was performed at the American College Theatre Festival.
Mesiner Acting Technique with Prof. Gaye Burgess.16+/$90. March 30th – 10 – 3 p.m. Gaye has performed and directed college and professional theatre in the U.S. and Canada. She teaches at UND and is a certified Meisner instructor.
