UND, Cass County partner for first Wellness Fair in Arthur, N.D., on Saturday

Almost 6,000 UND students are natives of North Dakota communities. So, the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines (CNPD) is giving back to the communities who make the college possible.

At the first-ever Cass County (N.D.) Wellness Fair from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, students and faculty from the CNPD are partnering with the Arthur (N.D.) Good Samaritan Society and Community of Care of Cass County to carry out a variety of health-focused activities.

The Wellness Fair, to be held at the Northern Cass School outside of Hunter, N.D. (1602 18th St. S.E.), will feature classes such as Caregiving for Adult Children with Aging Parents, Eating Well, Home Assessment: Balance & Fall Prevention, Bone Builder Exercise, and First Aid.

UND students and community nurses will perform hearing, vision, blood pressure, blood sugar, medication check, and nutrition screenings.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the CNPD to begin forging lasting relationships with the small communities that are so important to our region and our University,” said Denise Korniewicz, dean of the CNPD. “This event will be a wonderful learning experience for our students and faculty, and we hope to provide a selection of useful health benefits to the residents of the rural communities of Cass County.”

The fair includes lunch provided by the CNPD and the Alumni Association and Foundation, musical entertainment by local musician Alex Swanson, Bingo games, and giveaways.

“This is turning out to be a really great partnership, and I’m looking forward to a wonderful day in which we can serve our community, many of whom are older residents who don’t always have easy access to these health services and screenings,” said Myrna Hanson, executive director, Community of Care, a local nonprofit. The goal of Community of Care is “to enhance the quality of life of rural Cass County seniors in order to keep them in their homes as long as safely possible.”

Other sponsors include Arthur Drug, Northern Cass School, the American Diabetes Association, and Nodak Mutual Insurance.

Those interested in attending may contact Community of Care: 701.967.8502 or jjantzen@communityofcarend.com for more information.
