UND students to hold first-ever ‘Science Café’ May 2

The first-ever Grand Forks Science Café, started by students, will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in the Wild Hog Smokehouse, 4401 S. Washington St.

This inaugural science café, titled “How will sequestration affect the sciences?” will give local scientists an opportunity to gather and discuss impacts of sequestration on scientific agencies within our government.

Science Cafés are evening gatherings of local scientists. Invited moderators present a 15-minute talk on a current issues, and then the floor is open for all to discuss. All science fields are welcome to attend and students at all stages of their education are encouraged attend as well.

The primary moderator for the discussion is Eric Murphy of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Therapeutics. Murphy will facilitate a discussion on what sequestration is and how it might affect the various scientific agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The Grand Forks Science Café was founded by two UND graduate students: Nick Cilz, a neurology student pursuing a doctoral degree, and Annie Wargetz,  a Master of Science candidate working in the field of space studies. The two founded the Grand Forks Science Café to promote discussion among local scientists about current issues.
