North Dakota, Here’s to You from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences
The School of Medicine and Health Sciences invites alumni and friends, students, faculty and staff to celebrate the 105th anniversary of the School at UND Homecoming 2010 events on Friday, Oct. 8, in Grand Forks.
Festivities begin with a reception to honor Sioux Award recipients Mary Wakefield and Henry C. “Bud” Wessman from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Vennes Atrium at the School. Wakefield is administrator of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. She was associate dean for rural health, tenured professor and director of the Center for Rural Health at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences from 2001 to 2009. Wessman is an appeals resolution consultant for Noridian Administrative Services LLC in Fargo. He is best known for creating the physical therapy department at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he served as chair and professor from 1967 to 1993. Wessman served as mayor of Grand Forks from 1980 to 1988.
Immediately following the reception, the Clinical Education and Simulation Center will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Center is North Dakota’s and the region’s premier facility for teaching, assessment, and research of clinical skills for students and health care providers in medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, and emergency services, who will learn the safe and expert care of patients by practicing with human simulators. See how “Noelle” and her infant “Hal” teach the care of a mother and baby during delivery. “Adam” can experience a heart attack.
Capping off the day will be an All-School Social at the Alerus Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Honored guests will be the Silver and Golden Classes of 1985 and 1960, who will have an opportunity to review their original class photos and take new photos with classmates.
Jazz on Tap will provide live music. An SMHS timeline will be on display, highlighting significant moments in School history. Appetizers and beverages will be served.
