Remembering Edward Olaf Nelson

Edward Olaf Nelson, professor emeritus of mathematics, Grand Forks, (formerly of Ellison Bay, Wis.), passed away Oct. 26, 2010.  He was 86.

Edward was born to John and Anna Nelson on Oct. 3, 1924, in Ellison Bay, Wis., where he graduated from Gibraltar High School. After military service, he graduated from Luther College with a degree in math. He earned his Ph.D. in math from the University of Minnesota in 1959, and he served as a math professor at UND for 35 years before retiring in 1993.

Survivors include daughters, Julie (Rik) Getty, Boulder, Colo.; Gail Nelson, Northfield, Minn.; and Teresa (Doug) Bearrood, Woodbury, Minn.; and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Gordon (Donna) Nelson, Ellison Bay. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbe Nelson and siblings, Robert Nelson and Agnes (Nelson) Smith.
