Old Main Marketplace will host Sbarro pizza buffet

Sbarro Pizzeria in the Old Main Marketplace Food Court in the Memorial Union has organized another pizza buffet over the holiday break. Faculty and staff are invited to enjoy the pizza buffet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Thursday, Dec. 31. Everyone is welcome to all-you-care-to-eat pizza and salad for only $4.99.

Emerald and Ice Gala is Feb. 6

All benefited UND and related foundation employees and a guest are invited to the Emerald and Ice Gala from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Alerus Center Ballroom.

There will be a social hour from 7 to 8 p.m. featuring free appetizers and a cash bar. Downtown Horns will play live music from 8 p.m. to midnight, and guests may participate in a Mock Casino night provided by the Grand Forks Jaycees. Participants can use their casino winnings to bid on prizes at the end of the evening! The event will also feature a silent auction, with auction proceeds used to fund scholarships given by the Staff Senate.

Admission is $20 per person. Tickets may be purchased from any UND Staff Senator or at the following locations:

Faculty sought to teach summer K-12 educator workshops

Do you have a workshop idea for K-12 teachers or administrators? If so, we are looking for you. Each summer, the Continuing Education office of Professional Development for Educators (PDE) sponsors a variety of local workshops for K-12 educators to assist in their professional development requirements and needs. PDE is currently soliciting interest from UND faculty to develop workshops for the summer of 2010.

If you want to share your research, expertise, or have specific interests, content areas, or teaching strategies that you are passionate about and want to share, consider putting together a short-term, 15 instructional hour, site-based workshop to be offered this summer. PDE provides continuing education/professional development credit to educators for these graduate level workshops.

To keep costs down for participants, we encourage you to visit with your department chairs and deans for financial support of your idea. When providing workshops without departmental or grant support, stipends for facilitators can be arranged through facilitation agreements with PDE. Assistance is provided through PDE for classroom scheduling, audio visual equipment arrangements, and handout duplication.

If interested, please contact Kim Jones at 777-4225 for submission forms and guidelines. Tentative syllabi and forms should be submitted by Feb. 1, 2010. Patients sought for medical student training

The Office of Medical Education is looking for people to hire as patients for our medical students. We are looking for people to help students learn and practice history taking and physical exam skills. Payment will be $12 per hour for your afternoon of participation. The students learn a lot from this experience, and your willingness to help out would be greatly appreciated.

We need a diverse group of healthy men and women (ages 18 to 80) with the following:
• a flexible schedule
• transportation to and from the University
• limited number of medications and health problems

We would need you from 12:45 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. for one of the following Tuesday afternoons (sorry, you can’t come more than once). The afternoons are Jan. 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2. During this time, you would be interviewed and examined by three different student physicians. The experience will be similar to a visit to your own doctor’s office. You will be asked to share your personal medical history and allow the student to do a physical exam (this does not require shots, blood tests or other invasive procedures). Students are observed by physicians and all information is confidential (If there is medical or personal information you do not wish to share, you don’t have to).

Radiation Safety

How to Inspire and Motivate Employees

This can be especially important during difficult times when organizations or businesses make adjustments to meet the demands of the changing world. Running, Reading, & Reconciling Key Finance Reports in PeopleSoft

Prerequisite: Must have previously attended either a “Budgets Overview Inquiry” or “Budget vs. Cash Inquiry” U2 session and must have a PeopleSoft user ID and password for Finance Module.
This training provides the tools necessary to navigate through PeopleSoft in order to run, read, and understand PeopleSoft financial reports. Important tips will be provided to help you recognize why, when, and how to reconcile revenue and expense transactions posted to your funds. Microsoft Office available to UND employees for $9.95

UND employees are now eligible to participate in Microsoft's Software Assurance Home Use Program (HUP). This program enables UND employees to get a licensed copy of the current Microsoft Office applications to install and use on your home computer for $9.95 (other costs may apply depending on the options you choose). To qualify for participation in this program, you must be an active UND employee.

Under the Home Use Program, UND employees may acquire a licensed copy of Office 2007 Enterprise (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) or Mac Office 2008 (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point) to install and use on a home computer. You may continue using Microsoft Office while you are under UND employment and as long as UND continues to participate in the Microsoft Campus Agreement program.

As a result of the limited number of proposals that can be submitted, UND will conduct an internal review of preproposals. Preproposals should consist of the following sections:

 Impact on the research program of the collaborators, department(s), and college(s)
 Impact on the university’s mission as a whole
 Detailed budget.

Preproposals should be no more than three pages in length using a reasonable format (1 inch margins, font size 11, single-spaced). Preproposals are due in Research Development and Compliance (RD&C) by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010. Criteria used for reviewing preproposals will include appropriateness to the goal of the program; probability for funding by NSF; reasonableness of budgetary requests; and impact of the request on the university and the academic units involved. Investigators will be notified of the review results as soon as possible in order to provide as much time as possible to prepare a final proposal for submission.

Mary Amundson appointed to national boards

Mary Amundson, an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, was recently elected to serve as a member of the Program Directors Constituency Group for the National Area Health Education Center (NAO). NAO is the national organization that supports and advances the Area Health Education Center network that works to improve the health of individuals and communities by transforming health care through education.

Amundson also has been appointed to serve on the board of director’s for the new Essentia Institute of Rural Health, which will begin work on Jan. 1, 2010. Headquartered in Duluth, Minn., the institute is affiliated with SMDC Health System, Innovis Health, and Essentia Community Hospitals and Clinics and is a multi-state, not-for-profit health care system. Essentia Health is a leader in the development and advancement of business and clinical models for regional health care delivery.

In addition to her recent board appointments, as a board member of the National Rural Recruitment and Retention Network, Amundson has developed a series of national recruitment and retention workshops for the National Health Service Corps. The training is for community-based site administrators, Area Health Education Center administrators, and Primary Care Office and Primary Care Association directors. Created in 1972, the National Health Service Corps collaborates with underserved rural areas and inner-city neighborhoods alike to develop and expand health care for underserved populations. The NHSC recruits and retains caring and culturally competent health care professionals through a combination of programs, including educational loan repayment and scholarships.

Remembering Gene A. Homandberg

Gene A. Homandberg, chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, passed away in Grand Forks Monday, Dec. 21, at the age of 59.

Homandberg held the respected William Cornatzer Chair in Biochemistry at UND since his appointment as professor and chair in 2002. He was a highly recognized researcher in osteoarthritis and cartilage physiology. In recognition of his work, he was bestowed the Dr. Ralph and Marian C. Falk Professor of Biochemistry endowed chair for six years at Rush Medical College in Chicago before his appointment at UND.

In 1999, Homandberg was awarded permanent membership in the Frontiers in Bioscience Society of Scientists, based on his work in the regulation of cartilage metabolism in osteoarthritis.

An Iowa native, Homandberg pursued his undergraduate education at the University of South Dakota, where he earned a PhD in Biochemistry. He served as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Chemistry, Division of Biochemistry, at Purdue University, and later took advanced training as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Chemical Biology in the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolic and Digestive Disorders, Bethesda, Md.

Homandberg was a member of of the American Society of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology, the Orthopedic Research Society, the Osteoarthritis Research Society and the American Cancer Society among others. He has written more than 75 research journal articles in addition to invited reviews and book chapters; reviewed manuscripts for prestigious journals and applications to a variety of federal and private funding organizations; and mentored six PhD students and numerous undergraduate students and medical students.

His favorite hobbies were hiking, biking, rock climbing, photography, camping and all things outdoors. He also enjoyed technology and applying it to everything that he did.

Dr. Homandberg is survived by his mother, Darleen Homandberg of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four sisters, Becky Richeal (Ron) of Oregon, Wis.; Vicky Gannon of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Connie Homandberg of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Mary Summey (Todd) of Lennox, S.D. He is also survived by one brother, Al Homandberg (Beth) of Four Seasons, Mo.

Remembering Lucy Schwartz

Lucy McCallum Schwartz, 65, of Lake View, New York, died Dec. 19 in Houston, Texas, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, following a long, heroic struggle against complications related to leukemia.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Aug. 14, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Q. and Mary Frances McCallum of Raleigh, N.C. Lucy received her bachelor's degree from Salem College in Winston-Salem, and her master's degree and doctorate from Harvard University. She had a long and successful career as a professor of French and college administrator primarily at the University of North Dakota, where she taught French and directed the Office of Instructional Development between 1972 and 1989, and at Buffalo State College, where she held the rank of Professor, and chaired the Department of Modern and Classical Languages from 1995 to 2004. She also taught at Penn State University and Bucknell University, and served as Director of Special Programs at Lafayette College. She taught French language and literature at all levels. She published widely in the fields of French and Francophone literature, and was internationally recognized as a George Sand Scholar, with two published books and numerous articles. She retired from Buffalo State College in 2008.

She was a former board member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Hamburg, and active in several Western New York organizations dedicated to the promotion of foreign language study.

She is survived by her husband, Paul, and by her sons, Andrew Schwartz and his wife Lindsay Taylor of Denver, Colo., and Judson Schwartz and his wife Amanda Steerman of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Lucy loved her family, and took great pride in the character and accomplishments of her two sons and their wives. She loved Buffalo State College and its students; she brought to her teaching a profound interest in their development, as well as a love for the subjects she taught.

A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo, 695 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo, NY, on Tuesday, January 5, at 3 p.m.

Contributions in Lucy’s honor can be made to the Lucy McCallum Schwartz Scholarship Fund at Salem College, 601 South Church Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27101.
