Riedy named outreach dean

UND has named Joshua Riedy [REEDY] as associate vice president for outreach services and dean of outreach programs. The Hettinger, N.D., native who was raised near Lemmon, S.D., starts full-time June 18.

"I am very pleased Dr. Riedy has agreed to join us. His expertise in distance education and his experience on the system level of higher education provide what we need as UND continues to expand its outreach offerings, and partnerships are formed with colleges and departments within the University," said Robert Boyd, vice president for student and outreach services.

Since October 2004, Riedy has served as director of the Electronic University Consortium under the South Dakota Board of Regents. In that position, he was responsible for the accreditation, coordination and quality assurance of all off-campus programs and courses delivered by each of the six South Dakota Regental Universities: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and the University of South Dakota. Riedy also had system oversight of academic technologies including interactive video, learning management systems, and online student services.

Prior to that, he served as distance education director at South Dakota State University, where he also had been a distance education specialist, adjunct education instructor, technology training specialist and graduate teaching assistant. Before his employment at South Dakota State University, he worked as a high school agricultural education teacher and coach in Doland, S.D.

“I look forward to returning to the University environment, and I am delighted to be joining the Division of Continuing Education. I have long held the UND Division of Continuing Education in high esteem and feel that it is the preeminent provider of continuing and outreach education for the region,” said Riedy. “I hope that my skills and experience will contribute to the ongoing success of the Division of Continuing Education, as the services it offers are essential to the University, the state, and the region.”

Riedy holds a doctorate in education administration from the University of South Dakota, and a master’s degree in career and technical education and a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education, both from South Dakota State University.

Riedy and his wife, also a native of Hettinger, N.D., have two children.

Campus community invited to Fritz Memorial Service

In acknowledgement of the recent passing of Vera Fritz and in recognition of their significant contributions to the University of North Dakota, President Charles Kupchella invites faculty, staff, and students to celebrate the memories of Chester and Vera Fritz at a memorial service Thursday, June 14, at 3 p.m. in the Hopper-Danley Memorial Chapel: A Spiritual Center. Comments will be made by Gordon Iseminger, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of History; Thomas J. Clifford, president emeritus, University of North Dakota; Wilbur Stolt, director of libraries; and Hal Gershman, chair, Grand Forks City Council.

Some payroll and student records breached

You should be aware of a security breach for a limited number of North Dakota State University human resources/payroll records and student loan records of 57 North Dakota University System students. For about a two-week period, the records were vulnerable to unauthorized Internet access. The breach was not caused by a malicious attacker seeking the records.

The student loan records are for NDUS students who have loans administered by the North Dakota Student Loan Service Center and whose last name begins with the letter “A”.

The NDSU human resources and payroll records include public and private information, and appear to be records of individuals who left NDSU employment during 2005 and a portion of 2006. Individuals who are directly affected are being identified and will receive further information. The exact number of people affected is still being determined.

The records were on computers owned and maintained by a third-party vendor under contract to archive electronic copies of paper documents. The records were subject to unauthorized access after computer maintenance was performed following a power surge that disrupted normal operations. The machines are undergoing forensic examination at NDSU to determine exactly what records were vulnerable and if they were accessed. Private information contained in portions of the database includes names, addresses, social security numbers, loan applications and other financial information.

In addition to removing the computers from online access and notifying individuals directly affected, NDSU is reviewing procedures where private vendors have access to confidential information and the security measures those vendors undertake to protect the data.

News such as this is never welcome, particularly when all the details are not yet available, but we wanted you to know about the matter as soon as possible. -- John Adams, NDSU vice president for business and finance.

Backstage with the Arts offers arts audiences a behind-the-scenes look at favorite arts events. Join Job Christenson, director, and cast members of "Sweet Charity" Wednesday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion of the work of Bob Fosse, the original director and choreographer of the Broadway sensation, "Sweet Charity."

UND Aerospace conducts aircraft accident investigation course

The UND Aerospace Foundation and the Air Line Pilots Association, in a cooperative effort, continues a two and one-half day aircraft accident investigation course at the Grand Forks International Airport through June 14. The course provides an advanced level of instruction to individuals who may participate in aviation accident investigations conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

“As unfortunate as they are, aircraft accidents are opportunities for crash investigators to learn more about the errors pilots and organizations may make that result in accidents,” said Dana Siewert, UND Aerospace’s director of aviation safety. “This course develops hands-on skills by recreating an actual aircraft mishap in a learning environment.”

Over 30 airline pilots from around the U.S and Canada are participating in each course which uses actual aircraft wreckage donated by a firm in California. The wreckage “site” will be recreated south of the flight operations’ facility and used specifically for investigative training techniques.

This course is also offered to a select group of aviation employees and a limited number of aviation students who have completed aviation safety courses at UND. Aviation aircraft manufacturers who have expressed interest in this type of course and training are also attending.

Art & Wine Walk is June 16

Looking for something to do Saturday afternoons this summer? Enjoy the Art & Wine Walk Saturday, June 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. in downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Stroll through downtown and visit galleries, businesses, bars and restaurants to view art produced by regional artists, and sample wine. Artwork will be available for purchase, and artists will be on hand to discuss their work.

The Art & Wine Walk begins at the Empire Arts Center, where maps can be purchased for $10. All ages are welcome to attend, and those over 21 will receive a wristband, allowing participation in wine tasting. At each participating business, the map will be stamped (wine consumption is not required to receive a stamp). Turn in the map at the end of the walk to enter a drawing for one of two gift baskets of prizes donated by participating businesses.

Doctoral examination set for Maria Laura Parnas

The final examination for Maria Laura Parnas, a candidate for the Ph.D. degree with a major in biochemistry and molecular biology, is set for 1 p.m. Monday, June 18, in Room 1370, United Hospital Lecture Hall, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The dissertation title is, "Exploring the Ligand Binding Site on the Dopamine Transporter by Photoaffinity Labeling and Site-Directed Mutagenesis." Roxanne Vaughan (biochemistry) is the committee chair. The public is invited to attend.

Workshop helps teachers use games in classroom

Today's “digital natives” do not think and learn the same way as their parents and grandparents did: using games as education tools may be one way to reach them. That's why the University of North Dakota and EduTech, a leading organization for professional development for K-12 teachers, are offering a two-day workshop to show teachers how to take advantage of this new learning technology from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 18-19.

"We hear a lot about how games are a powerful learning medium," said Richard Van Eck, graduate director of the Instructional Design and Technology program at UND (idt.und.edu), "but there is very little guidance on how to make use of them in a way that meets curriculum goals and works within the constraints of the real-world classroom."

The workshop will be conducted by Van Eck and Margaret Meijers, both internationally recognized experts on the use of games in learning. Van Eck has several book chapters and scholarly articles, including the cover story for a national education magazine, on the use of games as learning tools and is a frequent keynote speaker and presenter in the United States and abroad. Meijers, a classroom teacher and curriculum coordinator at New Town High School in Australia, was one of four teachers worldwide recognized for her innovative teaching at the Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Teachers Forum. She was also awarded the prestigious Teaching Australia Best National Achievement by a Teacher in 2006, and received the Australian Computer Society Outstanding Teacher award in 2007.

Evening course begins June 22 in women studies

Staff are encouraged to use their tuition waiver this summer and take a thought-provoking six-week class in women studies. A&S 225: Intro to the Study of Women begins June 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and runs for six weeks; 3 credits.

One-week intensive theatre arts programs offered at UND

The Department of Theatre Arts and the Crimson Creek Players are pleased to offer one-week intensive courses in theatre arts management and musical theatre. Both programs are open to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate college students, teachers, and the general public. Participants will work together to plan and produce a showcase performance Saturday, July 14, at Burtness Theatre.

The theatre arts management program features instruction in production management, financial management and marketing, and will be taught by Kathleen McLennan, associate professor of theatre arts, and Ben Klipfel, director of marketing services partnership and experienced director of regional plays. The musical theatre program will provide instruction in acting, dance/movement, and vocal music, and will be taught by a team of three professionals: Gaye Burgess, associate professor of theatre arts; Anne Christopherson, assistant professor of music; and Job Christenson, artistic director of the North Dakota Ballet Company.

The courses are brought to you in part by the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Theatre Arts, the UND Summer Programs and Events Council, and the Crimson Creek Players, who are a division of the Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre. Participants will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25-29 for the theatre arts management program and July 9-12 for the musical theatre program.

When registering, participants can choose from several education tracks. The courses may be taken for non-credit, undergraduate or graduate academic credit, and professional development credit for educators. The registration fee is $500 to attend for non-credit. Educators may attend at a fee of $400 (includes two professional development graduate credits), and $600 (includes three professional development graduate credits). Additional hours may be required for participants earning credit. Participants enrolling in the musical theatre course must have some musical theatre experience.

Children's Summer Arts Camp registration still open

Registration for Children's Summer Arts Day Camp at the North Dakota Museum of Art for children ages 6-13 is still taking place.

Camps are filling quickly so don't miss out by registering soon. Children do not need any experience, only enthusiasm. Materials are supplied. Cost is $100 per week for members or those opening a family membership at the time of registration. Non-members' cost is $125 per week.

The camp of Aug. 6, Art City with artist Jennie O'Keefe from Winnipeg, promises to be an exciting camp featuring optics, puppets, music, making kaleidoscopes, 3-D glasses, shadow puppets and more.

EPO open enrollment is through June 25

EPO open enrollment is through Monday, June 25. During this time employees may change their health coverage to EPO or cancel their EPO coverage. If you do not know what plan you are currently on, contact Blue Cross at 1-800-223-1704. If you choose EPO health coverage you must choose Altru Clinic or MeritCare Clinic(EGF). Voice mail system will be upgraded June 14

An upgrade to the voice mail system will be performed beginning after 10 p.m. Thursday, June 14. There will be a few minutes sometime between 10 and 11 p.m. where the system will not be available. Applicants sought for Carnegie Scholars opportunity

The Carnegie Corporation is seeking applicants to the Carnegie Scholars Program, which supports research that “extends the boundaries of knowledge about Islam and Muslim communities.” Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and they may be either recent Ph.D.s or established scholars. Suggested topics include Islam in relationship to law, science, banking, property, pluralism, or tolerance; educational systems in Muslim communities; the role of women within Muslim societies; the relation of Islam to the state, including the secular state; the relation of Islam with other religions; Islam and nationalism; Muslim communities within the United States; the appeal of Islam; and the changing nature of Islam within a contemporary context. Business office no longer requests social security numbers

For security reasons, the Business Office no longer requests social security numbers on forms. The Privacy Release Form (FERPA) has been updated on the business office web site. Departments should destroy old copies of the form and download the newest version at http://www.und.edu/dept/busoff/html/studentform.htm

The privacy release form gives UND written permission from the student to release financial records and/or academic records to a person or organization, as designated on the form. When distributing this form to students, please inform the students that the form must be completed and returned to the UND Business Office before any information will be given to the individuals designated on the form.

The new privacy release form does not expire.

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, prohibits the release of information without the student's written consent. Campus Road bridge closed beginning June 18

We have had an inspection performed on the bridge over the coulee on Campus Road, and it has been determined that we have some structural failure that will require rebuilding a portion of the east side.
Beginning Monday, June 18, barricades will be placed at either side of the bridge far enough away to permit the contractor an adequate area to work, thus closing Campus Road for demolition. We anticipate the work will take about three weeks. We will communicate this as we get a better idea of the extent of the work. -- Craig Swenson, facilities.

The “Summer at UND” program offers a wide range of courses and activities for the community during the summer months. There are hundreds of academic courses to choose from during the day or in the evenings. Classes started again in June.

Space studies announces star parties

The Department of Space Studies and the Northern Skies Astronomical Society (NSAS), a local astronomy club, have begun hosting weekly star parties every Friday evening, through September, weather permitting, at the UND Observatory. Star parties will not be held June 15, June 29, July 27, and Aug. 10. Attendance is free and open to the public. People interested in attending should arrive at dusk.

If you are looking for a summer camp for your child, Wellness Camp Adventure is a place to consider. Wellness Camp Adventure is a two-week day camp, focused on the health and wellness of children. The primary goal of the Wellness Camp Adventure is to promote all seven dimensions of wellness (physical, social, emotional, environmental, occupational, spiritual, and intellectual wellness) in children ages 9 to 12 through a variety of activities such as fun healthy cooking class, music, arts and crafts, physical activity, games. The camp is located at the Wellness Center. Nursing students seek donations for Rescue Mission

Students from the College of Nursing will conduct a health fair for residents of the Northlands Rescue Mission in July. They are seeking donations of toothpaste, toothbrushes, sunblock and hygiene products such as shampoo, soap, and deodorant. Items can be dropped in the donation box at the Memorial Union by the Center for Student Involvement or at the College of Nursing. If your department wants to collect items, please call Lois Ustanko at 739-4562 to pick them up. Items will be collected through June 30.

A man's wedding ring was turned in to the Memorial Union INFO Center lost and found. It was found on Second Avenue behind the Union. The owner may stop at the INFO Center on the main level to identify and claim it. -- Memorial Union.

College of Nursing receives $15,000 match grant

The College of Nursing has received a match grant in the amount of $15,000 from Dakota Medical Foundation to provide scholarships for nursing students.

The grant award is contingent on the college raising matching dollars. Dakota Medical Foundation will provide a direct match, up to $15,000, for all scholarship dollars donated by alumni and friends. This unique opportunity allows one donor’s gift to have double the impact.

“Producing one nurse will, over a lifetime, directly affect nearly 1,000 people through the care they provide,” said Chandice Covington, dean of nursing. “Supporting nursing students really is an everlasting scholarship; Dakota Medical Foundation understands this. They are strong supporters of nursing both on the UND campus and across the region.”

Rising tuition and fees make funding a college degree difficult. Students often take part-time jobs to finance college, all the while losing valuable study time.
