|Large passenger van training is Aug. 1, 2|
Behind-the-wheel large passenger van training will be offered Tuesday, August 1, and Wednesday, Aug. 2. Call 777-4122 to sign up for a time slot. It takes approximately seven minutes to complete.
Drivers of large passenger vans with capabilities of transporting 10 or more passengers are required by the North Dakota Risk Management and the North Dakota State Fleet to complete a mandatory training program. The program consists of a 20-minute web-based training module and a behind-the-wheel module. It is preferred that the web training be completed prior to the behind-the-wheel portion. |Open forum set for associate dean of student life candidate|
The campus community is invited to attend the presentation and open forum of Thomas Hulm, a candidate for the position of associate dean of student life/director of judicial affairs and crisis programs. Hulm is currently the director of residence life at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa.
Mr. Hulm will facilitate a short presentation followed by an open forum during which members of the campus community will be able to ask him questions. The presentation and open forum will be held in the Memorial Union, River Valley Room, on Thursday, Aug. 3, from 2 to 3:15 p.m.

1. The new UND Student Wellness Center opens this fall!
The interim Wellness Center in the Hyslop has been a great temporary location that has served the needs of many students, faculty, and staff. We have enjoyed our stay here, but itâ€™s time to move on. The doors will close July 31 at 8 p.m., while we move to the new location at 801 Princeton Street.
Whatâ€™s with the wait?
We traded in the old equipment so that we could get all new, state-of-the-art equipment for the new building. That trade-in results in the closing of the interim center on July 31. Originally, the down time was only a couple of weeks, but a delayed construction schedule and the contractual obligations of trade in cause the down time to be extended. The good news is that the huge selection of fitness equipment will be all new when the doors open.
When the wait is overâ€¦
Are you up for some new fun and excitement on the UND campus? Do you think you can handle climbing a rock wall or take a high energy spin class? |National Night Out set for Aug. 1|
National Night Out is a nation-wide alcohol-free community party hosted in our area by the Grand Forks Police Department, the UND Police Department, United Way, NDAD, Grand Forks Social Services, Grand Forks Air Force Base, and many other area organizations and agencies. This year's event, Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Alerus Center, features national speakers addressing prevention of drug and alcohol abuse among children and teens in our area. There will be free car seat check-ups, free child ID's, law enforcement demo's and vehicles, a dunk tank, fire department displays, information booths, and free food. Alerus Financial will fire up their mega grill for a free burger feed.
The education sessions begin at 1 p.m., and Family Fun Time runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The Grand Forks community is invited.

|Chamber Music Concert set for Aug. 10|
The Chiara String Quartet will perform an evening of chamber music Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Faith Evangelical Free Church, 2315 Library Circle, starting at 7:30 p.m. The quartet began their career with a residency at UND between 2000 and 2002, and have returned regularly since then to re-connect with students, perform concerts, and serve as faculty with the Greater Grand Forks Symphonyâ€™s Red River Chamber Music Festival each August.
Lauded for "flawless ensemble" and "intense, riveting" performances, the Chiara String Quartet (Rebecca Fischer and Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; and Gregory Beaver, cello) was awarded first prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, top prizes at the Premio Paolo Borciani International Competition in Italy and at the Astral Artistic Services Audition, placing the group on the Astral roster of outstanding young artists launching major professional careers. The Chiara was selected as the Juilliard School's Lisa Arnhold resident quartet from 2003-2005. Currently, the quartet serve as artists-in-residence at the School of Music of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The members of the Chiara Quartet have mentored young musicians at Juilliard, Greenwood Music Camp, and Chamber Music at Snowmass, and have founded the Red River Chamber Music Festival, in Grand Forks. In addition, the quartet is taking a lead in developing a groundbreaking program in music entrepreneurship at the University of Nebraska. At the heart of their educational work is the belief that great live performance is the best way to connect people to music. In the words of Tim Smith of the Baltimore Sun, "this award-winning foursome clearly has what it takes to make a lasting mark in the chamber music world."
Tickets for the concert are $10 and may be reserved by calling the Symphony Office at 777-3359. Children 12 and under are free, but need tickets. Tickets will also be on sale at the door beginning one hour before the performance.

The Red River Chamber Music Festival, now in its second season, offers intermediate and advanced student musicians ages 14 and older a week-long program of chamber music and strings study. This program is held at the Hughes Fine Arts Center at UND, and includes ensemble practice and coaching, private instruction, student and faculty concerts, as well as opportunities to take advantage of cultural and recreational activities in the area. This yearâ€™s performance schedule is as follows:

|2006-2007 Symphony auditions set for Aug. 26|
Auditions for the 2006-2007 Symphony season will be held at the Hughes Fine Arts Center Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for returning musicians and from 3 until 6 p.m. for newcomers. There are currently known openings for all strings, however all orchestral musicians are encouraged to audition as a call list of auditioned musicians is used when substitutes are called throughout the season. The Greater Grand Forks Youth Orchestra Program is currently scheduling audition times for 2006-2007 programs on Sept. 9 and 10. Times may be scheduled by calling 777-3359 or sending an e-mail to email@example.com.
Students may audition for the following ensembles:
Greater Grand Forks Youth Symphony â€“ high school and college age musicians who play: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, piano, percussion.
Greater Grand Forks Youth Symphony â€“ Students in grades 5-9 who play violin, viola, cello or bass.
Divertimento â€“ high school and middle school strings players who wish to develop their skills in small ensemble playing (trios, quartets, quintets, etc.). Preference is given to students participating in one of the orchestra programs above.
The Youth Orchestra Program meets on eight consecutive Monday evenings at Hughes Fine Arts Center. Rehearsals are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (Youth Symphony) and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (Junior Symphony). Divertimento rehearsal times may vary according to the schedules of the participants. Total fees are $65/semester for Youth Symphony; $55/semester for Junior Symphony; and $35 for Divertimento. Scholarship and instrument loan assistance is available.
|Hyslop Sports Center lists new hours|
Following are Hyslop Sports Center new hours.
Beginning Aug. 21, Monday through Thursday, the north side of the building will be locked at 8 p.m., the racquetball courts will close at 8 p.m. and the multi purpose gym will be locked at 10 p.m. The entire building will close at 4:30 p.m. Fridays. Saturday and Sunday hours will be from noon to 5 p.m. on the south side of the building only.
|EPSCoR announces UND doctoral dissertation awards|
The North Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (ND EPSCoR) has announced the 2006 Doctoral Dissertation Assistantship (DDA) awards at UND.
ND EPSCoRâ€™s DDA awards are designed to increase the completion rate of Ph.D. students enrolled in the science, engineering, and mathematics disciplines at North Dakotaâ€™s research-intensive universities; and to increase the number of competitive proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation. Peter Alfonso, ND EPSCoR Co-Chair and Vice President for Research at UND noted that â€œthe overall goal of ND EPSCoR is to increase the competitiveness of North Dakota for merit-based grants and contracts in support of science and technology research from federal funding agenciesâ€.
DDA support is available for up to 24 months to enable students to dedicate their time exclusively to dissertation research. Applications are made by the students with supplemental information provided by their advisors, along with endorsement from their graduate program director and department chair.
The seven awards made at UND were competitively selected from a total of 11 applications. Gary Johnson, ND EPSCoR Co-Project Director and Assistant Vice President for Research at UND, noted that â€œthis is the largest number of DDA awards made in the history of the program at UND. The review committee was very impressed by the overall quality of the proposals.â€

A teaching certificate is not necessary. You do not need to speak Polish to teach in Poland ... actually it is better if you don't. The teaching
circumstances are ideal. Class sizes are from one to six students. The students are adults and college students who are very motivated and happy to speak English. Because of the vast amount of construction occurring on campus there are several parking changes that are being implemented over the summer. The changes are necessary to facilitate the traffic changes created by the large construction projects and to improve parking lot utilization at various times of the day.
Chester Fritz Auditorium Lot:
* Blue â€œSâ€ parking will be added in the center of the lot.
* â€œHWâ€ spaces and permits will no longer be utilized. Both will change to the existing â€œH18â€ designation.
* Some of the â€œHJFSâ€ spaces will be moved to the southern part of the lot closest to Campus Road. This will allow for better lot maintenance, snow removal, and parking availability for events at the Chester Fritz Auditorium.
Harvard Street (Tabula) Lot:
* The brown â€œGâ€ general area will be moved to the smaller lot directly to the east.
* The Tabula area that was â€œGâ€ will then be rezoned as blue â€œSâ€ parking.
* Red â€œAâ€ spaces have been increased by changing some of the green â€œHCCâ€ to red â€œAâ€.
Barnes and Noble:
* Brown â€œGâ€ spaces have been added on the north end of this parking area by converting some of the blue â€œSâ€ spaces.

|Remembering Henning Helms|
Henning Herman Helms, retired carpenter, facilities, died at Altru Hospital July 20. He was 75.
Helms was born in Elkton, S.D., to Herman and Henrietta (Rust) Helms. At the age of 14, he came to North Dakota to work on the Otto Hoverson farm. In 1952, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and was wounded in action in Korea, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Henning married Joyce Olson May 1, 1954. He worked for many years at Ireland's Lumber Co. and retired from UND, where he participated in the renovation of the J. Lloyd Stone Alumni Center.
He was an accomplished carpenter who did custom work at UND, Middle Grove Lutheran Church, and the family home.
He is survived by Joyce, his wife of 52 years, son Robert of Aurora, Colo., and daughter Lane Marie (William) Speake and gransons Andrew and Matthew Speake of Minneapolis, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Walter.
Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 28, at Middle Grove Church in rural Grand Forks, with visitation Thursday, July 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
