President Kelley invites faculty members to participate in 2009 summer commencement

I invite members of the faculty and administrative staff to join me at UND’s Summer Commencement Ceremony on Friday, August 7. The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. at the Chester Fritz Auditorium. Those participating are asked to wear academic regalia and report to the lower level of the Chester Fritz Auditorium no later than 2:30 p.m. Faculty members will march in the procession and be seated on the stage.

Volunteers needed for summer commencement on August 7

We invite you to serve as a Green Vest Volunteer at Summer Commencement on Friday, August 7 at the Chester Fritz Auditorium. Volunteers assist by greeting visitors who will be attending the ceremony, seating guests, and helping organize graduates in the assembly room. Commencement begins at 3 p.m., and all volunteers are asked to report to the Chester Fritz Auditorium by 1:15 p.m. Most volunteers will be able to leave shortly after the ceremony begins. We anticipate that commencement will conclude by approximately 4:15 p.m.

U.S. Air Force picks UND to host UAS-related conference

The U.S. Air Force has chosen UND Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Research, Education and Training as the site for an academic outreach conference to be held August 4-6. About 100 U.S. universities will be invited to participate in the conference at UND.

Signed into effect on June 26 by Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley and U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, the U.S. Air Force Unmanned Aircraft 40-year “Flight Plan” will be the central symposium topic.

“The U.S. Air Force wanted to reach out to academia to engage that community regarding the Air Force’s future needs,” said Douglas Marshall, director of program development for the UAS Center. “The long-term goal is to take people out of the cockpit to reduce the risk and still have the capability of defense.”

The Air Force recently briefed UND officials on its plans for the role of unmanned aircraft in defense measures, but this will be the first time the document is made publicly available, Marshall said.

“I don’t know if there’s ever been an outreach like this by the Air Force. We’re honored that they chose us to do it—it’s a credit to all the people who do the work, our senators and state—all the people who live and work here,” Marshall said. “I don’t know any other state that has thrown its efforts behind such a program.”

Senator Kent Conrad and Senator Byron Dorgan are expected to provide welcoming remarks via satellite. The UND Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems has provided premier UAS research and education through funding provided through Sen. Dorgan's efforts since 2005. The U.S. Department of Defense has been the leader in the implementation of unmanned aircraft systems in support of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Air Force officials also are expected to present on the MQ-X aircraft that is the next generation of the Predator aircraft recently used in the state-wide flood efforts. The symposium will provide the opportunity to discuss the Air Force Flight Plan, the future of UAS technology and allow officials to network; thereby laying the groundwork to respond to future requests for proposals.

“It’s a good opportunity to expose the community to the rest of the world,” Marshall said. “We’re pretty proud of what we’re doing here.”

SUNRISE to host American Indian students and teachers

American Indian students from tribal communities throughout the North and South Dakota will participate in the Native American Freshman Research Experience July 6-17 at both the UND and North Dakota State University in Fargo.

Fifteen high school students, two high school teachers, and four tribal college students will spend two weeks working in laboratories with SUNRISE faculty mentors as well as participating in programs designed to introduce them to North Dakota's two research university communities and to science and engineering majors.

Participants will be welcomed by UND President Robert Kelley, SUNRISE Director Wayne Seames and staff members of the UND American Indian Student Services Center at an opening ceremony at 9 a.m., July 6, at the UND American Indian Student Services Center. The participants will then be paired with their faculty mentors and work on research related to sustainable energy technologies.

Funding for this program is provided by the Department of Energy EPSCoR Infrastructure Improvement Program and the SUNRISE BioProducts Center of Excellence. The program coordinator is Julia Zhao, assistant professor of chemistry at UND. The NDSU program is managed by Uwe Burghaus, associate professor of chemistry.

Founded in 2005, SUNRISE is a student-centered, faculty-led research program at UND, North Dakota State University and other North Dakota Universities.

The mission of SUNRISE is to conduct research that contributes to solving complex energy-related problems, investigate the development of sustainable energy options and spur economic development and job-creation for North Dakota, increase UND and NDSU research competitiveness in sustainable energy, and finally, produce graduates to develop and promote sustainable energy in North Dakota, the region, and the nation. All this is done within a unified, interdisciplinary program that translates fundamental research into commercial solutions.

Hamline Square Apartment tours held Tuesdays in July

Units are still available in the new Hamline Square University Apartments near the Ralph Engelstad Arena. Tours of the apartments will be held on July 14, 21 and 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. Students, faculty and staff are welcome. No reservations are required. The building is scheduled to open August 1.

Hamline Square University Apartments are 77 spacious units with air conditioning, dishwasher, microwave, laundry hook-up and underground heated parking. To be eligible for Hamline Square, the leaseholder needs to be a UND student 21 years of age or older by December 31, or eligible for family housing; roommates may be younger than 21.

UND Grad Expo is July 14

"Exporting Democracy" is the subject of the next Why? radio show

Why? radio show will broadcast "Exporting Democracy" on Sunday, July 12, 5 p.m., with guest speaker Paul E. Sum.

"Democracy assistance" has become ever more important to U.S. foreign policy since the end of the Cold War. Its goal is to help usher in or encourage democratic practices amongst the world. But these attempts raise many philosophical questions including whether it is possible to "export" democracy at all. Paul E. Sum is a political scientist whose research explores the effectiveness of such democracy assistance programs. In late July, he will travel to Romania for one year to investigate that country's transition to democracy. With this episode of WHY?, we will catch up with him before he goes and ask a range of preliminary but related questions: What is a democracy? What conditions are necessary for a transition to this form of government? What method most effectively delivers democracy assistance? And, what has the track record of the U.S. attempt to foster democracy been so far? We hope, when he returns, to revisit these questions and discover what new information he can provide about the process of democratization in Romania and around the world.

Paul Sum is an associate professor of Political Science at UND. His interests were shaped through his experience during an earlier trip to Romania as a Visiting Scholar and Fellow at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj (1996-1998). He has worked with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State (formerly the U.S. Information Agency), the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, Democracy International, and the International Research & Exchanges Board. His work includes monitoring elections and campaigns, assessing pre and post-election voter surveys, and evaluating the impact of various democracy assistance programs in Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and Romania among other locations.

Helen Melland farewell reception is July 16

Join the College of Nursing in saying farewell to Helen Melland, interim dean of nursing.

A farewell reception will be held Thursday, July 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. (program at 3:30 p.m.) at the J. Lloyd Stone House.

Helen has been an integral part of the College since 1989 and has helped us to grow into a leading school of nursing. During her time at UND, Helen has worn many hats including that of professor, department chair, associate dean, interim dean, and, most importantly, friend and mentor.

Helen is leaving UND to be the dean of nursing at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. Let us tip our hats and thank Helen for sharing her energy, time, talent, and vision that has clearly been an asset to the College, UND, North Dakota, and the nursing profession.

Blues on the Red music series continues

The Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce the second of the 2009 Blues on the Red music series Saturday, July 25, from 5 to 10 p.m., in Town Square, with two exciting acts from out of town: Cool Disposition (headliner) and Dee Miller Band (feature).

The event, co-sponsored by the City of Grand Forks, the CVB and Canad Inns Destination Center, is in its second year, and with the addition of a third date and new entertainment, it promises to be even better than the inaugural year. The music will get rolling at 5 p.m. and last until 10 p.m., and admission is free to all. Lawn chairs welcome; concessions available.

The last of the 2009 Blues series will be held August 22, with Jimi ‘Prime Time’ Smith with Barbara LeShoure as the headliner and Eddie Rickert & Blue Voodoo as the feature.

The first Blues on the Red was held August 9, 2008, with well over 600 people convening in Town Square. Highlights from the event can be found by logging on to the CVB’s website at www.visitgrandforks.com and clicking on Videos. A second event was held on September 20, 2008.

Institutional Review Board meeting is August 5

UND's Institutional Review Board will meet at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, in 404 Twamley to consider all research proposals submitted to the IRB Office before Friday, July 24.

Clinical medical projects must be reviewed by the Clinical Medical Subcommittee before being brought to the Full Board. Proposals for these projects are due in the Institutional Review Board Office before Friday, July 17.

Minutes from the meeting will be available in the IRB Office approximately one week after the meeting.

Faculty and staff encouraged to participate in residence hall move-in

Welcome weekend is coming soon and the Hall Orientation Team (a student organization in the residence halls) is looking for faculty and staff volunteers to meet and greet new families and students as they move into the residence halls. This is a new initiative where faculty and staff will join over 150 returning students to assist families and students move their belongings into the residence halls.

Residence Hall move-in is an exciting time on campus and a great way to meet students and families in a casual setting. A volunteer commitment is only three hours on Friday, August 21, or Saturday, August 22. Shifts include free lunch and a t-shirt.

UND Med School-Arizona Partnership Provides Workforce Training

The clinical laboratory science (CLS) program at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences has partnered with the University of Arizona (UA) to offer CLS certificate training program to UA students.

Starting this fall, undergraduates at UA majoring in biochemistry can take classes through the existing and successful CLS distance learning program at UND. The credits from these classes will be put toward their biochemistry degree from UA and toward a certificate in CLS from UND. This will qualify them to sit for the CLS national certification exam.

UND instructors will teach the lectures online while the university medical center and the department of pathology at UA will take care of the hands-on lab portion of the classes.

Despite their distance from North Dakota, each partnership fortifies the UND CLS program, which supplies clinical laboratory scientists to much of the region.

“The CLS profession is facing a workforce shortage that is reaching crisis mode as programs are being closed nationwide,” said Brooke Solberg, MS, MT (ASCP), an instructor with the UND CLS program and its certificate program director. “Every partnership we create makes our traditional, on-campus program less at-risk for closure, which means we can continue to graduate more than 60 students annually that will be able to populate regional laboratories.”

“We chose UND as an educational partner for a number of reasons,” said Donna Wolk, PhD, division chief for clinical and molecular microbiology at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. “The UND faculty truly portrays all that is right and good about health care. They are team oriented, inclusive, open-minded, flexible, and most importantly dedicated to delivering the best in content and ease of use for their students.”

The UND CLS program partners with about 15 institutions throughout the nation to provide CLS training through distance education, including Mayo Clinic and the U.S. Veterans Administration. There are also new agreements in progress with the University of Pittsburg Medical Center and Boyce and Bynum Pathology Laboratories in Missouri, both of which learned about the UND program through the UA partnership.

UND doctors receive Humanism in Medicine awards

David M. Schall, associate professor of surgery at UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences, recently was honored with the prestigious Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. Marisa A. Upton, a 2009 UND medical school graduate and Minot native, also received a Tow award.

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards are sponsored by the New Jersey-based Arnold P. Gold Foundation. They recognize physicians and medical students who best demonstrate the foundation’s ideals of outstanding compassion in the delivery of care, respect for patients, their families and health care colleagues, as well as clinical excellence.

Schall was nominated by students and fellow faculty members for the award because of his widely recognized willingness to help others, his demonstrated compassion and empathy in his treatment of and relationships with patients, and for his excellence in professional behavior toward students, colleagues, and the community. He teaches senior medical students in their required Surgery Acting Internship.

A native of Grand Forks, Schall graduated from UND School of Medicine with highest honors in 1997. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Schall joined Valley Bone & Joint Clinic in 2002 after completing an orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. At Valley Bone & Joint Clinic, Dr. Schall specializes in adult reconstruction and foot and ankle surgery, as well as providing general orthopedic and fracture care.

Nominated by a peer, Marisa A. Upton was described as, “A true doctor’s and friend’s friend. Marisa’s compassion towards her patients and those she works with is evident daily. She is an inspiration to all she meets, and her compassion for her patients is comparable to none.”

Upton, a first year resident at the Minot Center for Family Medicine, has consistently volunteered for numerous activities including Special Olympics, blood drives, high school gymnastics, a mentorship program for Native American youth, and teaching elementary classes about tobacco use dangers. For four years, she served as class representative on the medical school committee that reviews poor academic performance, issues of professionalism, or academic honesty. She is a highly valued contributor, demonstrating exceptional maturity, judgment, and compassion.

The Gold Foundation sponsors the annual Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards at over 85 of the nation's medical schools. The awards are made possible through a generous donation from entrepreneur and teacher Leonard Tow.

Wonderlich receives international research leadership award from Academy of Eating Disorders

Stephen Wonderlich has received the Leadership Award for Research from the Academy of Eating Disorders. Wonderlich is a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of clinical neuroscience at the UND medical school, director of clinical research at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, Fargo, and co-director of the MeritCare Eating Disorders Institute, Fargo.

Wonderlich is recognized for conducting internationally-respected and impactful eating disorder research, and providing mentorship and teaching to other (particularly younger) eating disorder researchers. He has been influential in guiding new developments and setting new directions in eating disorders research. His work covers multiple areas of inquiry including risk factor research, treatment research, and research into eating disorder diagnoses.

The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) is a global professional association of approximately 1,200 members committed to leadership in eating disorders research, education, treatment, and prevention.

“Every year many clinicians, scientists, public service organizations and businesses make exceptional contributions in the search to provide ever more effective prevention and treatment interventions for body image and eating disorders,” according to Susan Paxton, AED president. “In the Academy’s annual awards, we recognize individuals and organizations whose activities in this field have significantly improved the lives of girls and boys and women and men around the world.”

Staff Senate announces the July "U-Shine" award winner

UND Staff Senate is proud to announce the July “U Shine Award” recipient, Cynthia Veitch, Terrace Dining Center. Cindy was nominated by Lisa Burger, Student Success Center, and was presented with a check for $50 and a certificate by Staff Senate President, Loren Liepold, on July 6.

This award is presented monthly to a UND staff member who went out of their way to make UND a better place. Here is an excerpt of what Lisa had to say about Cindy:

“Any one of the U Shine categories can describe why Cindy was nominated for this award! She exhibits a warm and caring attitude towards everyone with whom she has contact. One recent experience exemplifies how she has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Cindy sells lunch tickets everyday at the Freshman Getting Started program. One day last week, upon arrival at the program, a mother realized she had left her purse on her kitchen counter in Fargo, leaving her and her son without money to purchase Freshman Getting Started lunch tickets. Without hesitation, Cindy was willing to give this student and his mother money out of her own pocket to cover the expense. That truly was a U Shine moment! We appreciate all that Cindy does!”

New interim policy implemented for credit cards

A new interim University policy, "2.3 Accepting Credit Cards and Electronic Checks to Conduct University Business," was issued June 19. The policy can be viewed in its entirety on the VPFO Policy website under Student Account Services, http://www.und.edu/dept/policyoffice/html/finance.html#bus.

Policy Statement: "All University of North Dakota departments and colleges that conduct electronic-based financial transactions for the University, which include credit/debit card or electronic check (eCheck) transactions, must be compliant with: Payment Card Data Industry Standards, all applicable laws and mandates, and North Dakota University System and UND policies and procedures."

New software purchasing policy goes into effect July 1

President Kelley has approved a new software purchasing policy that has led to the development of a streamlined software purchasing procedure. A group of individuals, assembled by Josh Riedy, CIO, worked through the details to ensure the functionality of the process. The new Software Purchasing Procedures and a Non-Standard Purchasing Form are available in the policies and procedures section of the Purchasing site at:

Policy changed for mileage reimbursement

UND Accounting Services continues to review policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness for UND and its employees. Beginning July 1, the UND mileage reimbursement rate for personal vehicles will be consistent with other state agencies and the North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) 54-06-09. Currently, the UND reimbursement rate for personal vehicle mileage is more restrictive than required by NDCC. The in-state mileage rate will be paid to any location 300 miles beyond the borders of the state. Mileage in excess of 300 miles will be paid at the out-of-state mileage rate.

The current reimbursement rate for in-state mileage is $.45/mile; the current rate for out-of-state mileage is $.18/mile. The actual reimbursement rate may fluctuate periodically as established by the ND Office of Management and Budget to align with the US General Services Administration (GSA) rate.

NDCC still requires the use of state-owned vehicles unless the employee's supervisor or their designate has approved the use of a personal vehicle.

North Dakota State Fleet updates reservation system

The North Dakota State Fleet is in the process of updating the software used to reserve and dispatch vehicles.

When calling to reserve a vehicle, the following information will be required. Please have this information prior to calling:

Department brochures requested for resident assistant (RA) training

During the year, RAs (student staff members who live in the residence halls) assist hundreds of UND students in finding help at campus offices. It is important that RAs are aware of all campus resources so they can connect UND students to the right people. Any office or department that would like to share their information is asked to send 20 copies of a brochure/informational material to the Housing Office c/o Renee Hauschulz, Box 9029, by August 1. Campus Safety and Security explains emergency notification testing

On Monday, June 22, Campus Safety and Security officials tested two of several communication methods used for emergency notification to the UND campus. The following is summary of the two communication methods used.

The test on Monday morning was different than the previous tests conducted earlier this year. Rather than push the message out to all campus persons (faculty, staff and students) to all devices, this test was limited in scope to only faculty and staff while utilizing an "escalation" process. This escalation process is intended to minimize the number of duplicate messages, thereby reducing the overall time for message delivery to the devices.

At 8:42 a.m., a message was pushed out through NotiFind contacting faculty and staff utilizing text message, personal or work cell phone, and campus phone. Escalation worked as follows:

1) Text message - if the text message was sent successfully, NotiFind stopped trying to contact you. That would have been the only message received.

If the text message was not successful, the system continued routing the message to:

2) Work Cell/Home Cell phone - if the system placed a call successfully to either of these devices, the system stopped trying to contact you.

If the phone call to a work or personal cell phone was not successful or acknowledged, the system continued routing the message to:

3) Campus phone - this was the system's final attempt to contact you.

If the phone call to your campus phone was not successful or acknowledged, there was no additional contact made. Due to the time of the day and the content of the NotiFind message, home phone numbers were not selected for this test. Faculty and staff would either be at work or out of the office. If a person was at home, depending upon where they live, they would have not heard the outdoor door siren system for the UND campus.

If you did not receive a NotiFind message on Monday, June 22, please email your contact information to Anita of the Payroll Office at kemnitz@mail.und.edu. For those who have their personal cell phone listed as their "home phone" within PeopleSoft, no contact was made during this test. Cell phone numbers should be listed under the "personal cell phone" or "work cell phone" fields.

Outdoor siren system: The second emergency notification test utilized the four outdoor sirens strategically placed throughout campus.

At approximately 9:05 a.m., a message of five steady electronic beeps followed by the digital voice, "This is a test of the UND outdoor emergency broadcast system, this is only a test" was released for persons outdoors.

Several Campus Safety and Security employees were stationed outdoors in various parts of the campus to evaluate the clarity and volume of the test. All reports from outdoors were affirmative that sound and clarity were adequate.

The siren system is intended for outdoor notification. Depending on your location within a campus building, you may or may not have heard the sirens. In the event of an actual emergency, please note the siren system is one of many communication tools that will be used to notify the campus community. Other communication mechanisms include NotiFind, local media, email, the UND web page, building public address systems, etc.

We are pleased to have the new outdoor siren system in our inventory of communication tools, and hope this note helps all members of our campus community better understand the variety of ways we plan to provide emergency information to you.

Student Health Services, other UND officials monitoring H1N1 Flu Virus

University of North Dakota Student Health Services and other UND officials are in day-to-day contact with national, state and local health officials as the United States sees more cases of the H1N1 (Swine) Flu virus.

Overall, flu is “moderate,” says World Health Organization

The situation continues to evolve and the World Health Organization has upgraded the level to Phase 6, a pandemic level. But that change in status is because more countries have been impacted, not because the severity of the flu has increased, says Michelle Eslinger, director of UND’s Student Health Services. Here is what the World Health Organization says about severity on its web site:

At this time, WHO considers the overall severity of the influenza pandemic to be moderate. This assessment is based on scientific evidence available to WHO, as well as input from its Member States on the pandemic’s impact on their health systems, and their social and economic functioning.

The moderate assessment reflects that:

Most people recover from infection without the need for hospitalization or medical care.
Overall, national levels of severe illness from influenza A(H1N1) appear similar to levels seen during local seasonal influenza periods, although high levels of disease have occurred in some local areas and institutions.

Overall, hospitals and health care systems in most countries have been able to cope with the numbers of people seeking care, although some facilities and systems have been stressed in some localities.

H1N1 Symptoms

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), H1N1 flu strain has symptoms in humans similar to those of seasonal flu, including fever, sore throat, cough, chills, headache and body aches. Health experts say young, healthy adults, such as the student population at UND, are at low risk for severe complications.

Students who experience flu symptoms such as sudden onset of fever above 100 degrees, cough or sore throat should contact — via telephone – Student Health Services for evaluation. Please instruct students to call 777-2605 to schedule an appointment and as always, utilize universal precautions when entering the clinic if they have a frequent and/or severe cough (face masks and hand sanitizer are available at both entrances). Faculty and staff should consult their personal physicians.

UND’s Student Health Services is a formal participant in the CDC surveillance program for identifying strains of influenza, and works in collaboration with local and federal health organizations in this regard on a routine basis.

Advice for Travelers

Regarding the risk of being infected by an influenza virus, travelers are advised, whenever possible, to avoid crowded enclosed spaces and close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections. Hand-washing after direct contact with ill persons or their environment may reduce the risk of illness. Ill persons should be encouraged to practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, wash hands).

Follow Disease Prevention Practices

This is a good time to emphasize basic disease preventions, which include:
• Ill students, faculty and staff should stay home while ill
• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw the tissue away
• Wash hands or use a hand sanitizer after using a tissue
• Wash hands frequently during the day
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
• Avoid close contact with people who are ill or appear ill

What Can Employees Do to Reduce the Spread of H1N1 Flu in the Workplace?

From the CDC web site:
Stay home if you are sick. If you have symptoms of influenza-like illness, stay home for 7 days after symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. Following these recommendations will help keep you from infecting others and spreading the virus.

Employees who are well but who have an ill family member at home with pandemic H1N1 flu can go to work as usual. These employees should monitor their health every day, notify their supervisor and stay home if they become ill. Employees who have an underlying medical condition or who are pregnant should call their health care provider for advice, because they might need to receive influenza antiviral drugs to prevent illness. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be used if soap and water are not available. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Avoid close contact with sick people. If an employee suspects that they have been exposed to a sick person with pandemic H1N1 influenza, he or she may continue to go to work as usual. These employees should monitor their health every day and should notify their supervisor and stay home if they become ill.

Employees are also encouraged to help maintain a healthy work environment by periodically wiping down with a disinfectant or disinfectant wipes any public surfaces - counters, telephones, etc. - which regularly come in contact with the general public.

Columbia Road to be reduced to one-lane traffic starting July 6

Motorists in Grand Forks will have to deal with some traffic restrictions along N. Columbia Road for about a month. Traffic will be reduced from two lanes to one lane, each way, on Columbia Road starting July 6.

The temporary change is necessary to allow workers to replace an underground water forcemain at the intersection of 10th Avenue N. and Columbia Road.

The work is expected to wrap up on Wednesday, August 5, weather permitting.

Submission of proposals to external funding agencies begins July 1

Due to personnel changes in Research Development and Compliance, effective July 1, all electronic grant proposals must be sent to Barry Milavetz at barrymilavetz@mail.und.nodak.edu with a copy of the e-mail/proposal sent to rdc@mail.und.nodak.edu.

John La Duke will return full time to his position at Arts and Sciences effective July 1. Therefore, proposals should not be sent to him after June 30.

While we will make every effort to ensure that all proposals are submitted in a timely manner, we would appreciate your cooperation. Please notify RD&C well in advance of any deadlines if a complex proposal will be coming for review. UND Aerospace students break flight training record

UND Aerospace students surpassed 100,000 system-wide flight training hours in a fiscal year, breaking their previous record of more than 95,000 hours. As of Sunday, June 21, the students also broke the record for the month of June with 8,830 hours, surpassing their record of 7,600 hours.

Director of Flight Operations Alan Palmer noted, “Our primary goal at UND Flight Operations is to ‘provide the highest standard of professional aviation education.’”

As a part of the aviation core curriculum, students are required to hold a permanent launch schedule, meeting with their flight instructors at a minimum of three times a week. While UND Aerospace Sciences operates a fleet of Piper aircraft, students most commonly fly the Warrior, Seminole and Arrow airplanes. Also new to the program is the Cessna 172 Skyhawk aircraft. Other specialty aircraft include the Decathlon aerobatic airplane and several helicopters.

“A significant element in this education process is to provide a vision for each student so that they can see what the future holds for them. Our challenge is to translate that vision into reality,” Palmer said.

Robert Wayne Kemper remembered

Robert Wayne Kemper (Bob) was born in Drake, N.D. on Christmas Day in 1923 to Raymond and Lillian Kemper. Raymond was a rural mail carrier and Lillian an elementary school teacher. Throughout school Bob was active in school events, particularly music and sports. Following high school graduation he attended Jamestown College. After one year he interrupted his education to join the War Training Service (WTS), a branch of the Army Air Corps in which civilians learned to fly ferry war planes to Europe. His WTS instruction included flight training in Grand Forks, N.D. and Hibbing, Minn. While in Hibbing he met Rose Majerle, whom he later married on July 31, 1945 in Hibbing. Rose then accompanied Bob as he continued flight training at various locations. He was assigned to the regular Army Air Corps and earned his wings as a fighter pilot and a commission as Second Lieutenant about the time the war ended.

Shortly after rejoining civilian life they settled in Hibbing where Bob was initially employed as an accountant. He later joined an international chemical analysis laboratory as office and human relations manager. It was in Hibbing where they raised their sons Donn Scott (always called Scott) and Bruce. In 1966 Bob, Rose and Bruce moved to Grand Forks where Bob attended UND, completing an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Business Law, a graduate degree in the same field, earned a CPA Certificate, became a faculty member of the Accounting and Business Law Department and retired in 1985. In 1997 Bob and Rose moved to Rochester, Minn., and in 2004 Bob moved back to Grand Forks.

Bob died peacefully at Edgewood Vista in East Grand Forks on June 28. During his life he most enjoyed family time, including many memorable hours spent at the family cabin on a lake near Hibbing, and friends. Bob maintained an interest in flying throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Scott and Bruce and wife Rose. He is survived by a brother, Gene (Mickey), of Cass Lake, Minn.
