|Martin Luther King Jr. celebration week continues|
The University of North Dakota will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week Jan. 19-24. To find out about the programming for the week listed below, visit the Era Bell Thompson Multicultural Center Web site, http://sos.und.edu/erabell/, or call 777-4259. Most of the events listed below are free and open to the campus community and Greater Grand Forks communities. There is a cost for the Friday afternoon awards luncheon of $5 for UND students, $10 for faculty, staff and the general public. Kids 12 and younger are free.
The week will have two featured guests. They are Pamela Johnson, author of the book "Everyone Is Multicultural: Bridging Cultural Influences for Business Success," and Ronald Myers, a physician, accomplished jazz musician and ordained Baptist minister.
Dr. Johnson draws on more than 20 years of experience in multicultural leadership development to explain the past elements of the diversity movement, redefine the meaning of true diversity, and present a new theory of multicultural leadership. She holds a bachelor's degree in counseling guidance, master's degree in counseling and guidance, and a doctorate in counseling and guidance education.
Dr. Myers is rare in his profession, as he purposely sought out places to practice medicine where no one else would. A native of Milwaukee, Myers graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School.

|Ronald Myers presents Dean's Hour talk|
Ronald Myers will present the Deanâ€™s Hour at noon Thursday, Jan. 22, in Room 1350, Reid Keller Auditorium, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Dr. Myers has devoted his career to caring for some of the poorest, under-served citizens in our nation who live in the Mississippi Delta. |Biology seminar is Friday|
Warren Burggren will present a seminar titled, "How Developing Animals Ignore Physiological Dogma," at noon Friday, Jan. 23, in 141 Starcher Hall. Dr. Burggren received his Ph.D. from the University of East Anglia in 1976. He is currently the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. His research interests include developmental physiology at the organ system and organism levels, comparative animal physiology, environmental and ecological physiology, and evolution of respiratory and cardiovascular systems. All are invited to attend. The seminar is hosted by the Biology Department.

|UND to host honor band, choir, orchestra festival|
The Department of Music will host their 24nd annual Honor Band, Choir and Orchestra Festival Jan. 23-25. This festival will feature 275 high school students from throughout North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming. These musicians were selected from the more than 700 students who auditioned in the fall. While these students are on campus, they will participate in rehearsals and master classes, as well as present a concert.
As part of the festival, two concerts will be presented that are open to the public. The first concert will be held Friday, Jan. 23, in the Chester Fritz Auditorium. This will be a Showcase Concert of many of the ensembles from the UND Music Department. The 12:00 Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ronnie Ingle, will perform in the lobby at 3:55 p.m. prior to the concert which begins at 4:10 p.m. Featured on the concert will be the UND Varsity Bards Menâ€™s Choir and Concert Choir, both conducted by Joshua Bronfman; the Allegro Womenâ€™s Choir, conducted by Grace St. Pierre; the Chamber Orchestra, led by Alejandro Drgao; and the Wind Ensemble, James Popejoy, conductor. The Steel Drum Band, directed by Mike Blake, will perform in the lobby immediately following the concert. There is no admission charge for this Friday concert.
On Sunday, Jan. 25, the UND Honor Band, Choir, and Orchestra will present their concert at 2:30 p.m. in the Chester Fritz Auditorium. The ensembles will be conducted by UND music professors Joshua Bronfman, Alejandro Drago and James Popejoy. Tickets for this event are $6 for adults, $3 for students/senior citizens, or $12 per family (two adults, two children), and are available at the door.

|Classical accordion, trombone duo to perform at Museum Sunday|
Accordionist Stefan Hussong and trombonist Mike Svoboda will perform in the Museum Concert Series Sunday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Museum galleries. They will be playing repertoire from Baroque to the contemporary. The Museum of Art is located on Centennial Drive on the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. The Museum Concert Series, founded in 1990, is a celebration of classical music that brings performers of international repute to the Museum. It is the oldest chamber concert series in the region and draws a mixed audience of all ages. Mayville State University shares the series with the Museum, hosting their performance on Monday evenings.
Stefan Hussong was born in Koellerbach an der Saar, Germany, and received scholarships from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, DAAD, Akademie Schloss Solitude and the Art Foundation of Baden-Wuerttemberg State. In 1987 he received the first prize at the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition for Contemporary Music.
Hussong was awarded the Echo Classic Prize of the German Phonoacademy in the category Best Performer of the Year 1999. That same year his solo CD published by DENON with works by John Cage won the Best Record Award of the year. Hussong has premiered more than 80 works dedicated to him and he has recorded more than 25 CD`s, some of which have won several prizes.
Hussong has performed as a soloist with, among others, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Musikfabrik Nordrhein-Westfalen, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Rundfunk Symphonieorchester Saarbruecken and Tokyo Shin Nippon Philharmonic Orchestra.â€¨â€¨
The trombonist and composer Mike Svoboda was born in 1960 on the island of Guam, grew up in Chicago and came to Germany with the help of a BMI Award to Young Composers in 1982. His 11 years as trombonist and assistant with Karlheinz Stockhausen during the 1980s and 1990s proved to be of eminent importance for Svoboda's musical development. Including the collaboration with Stockhausen and other composers such as Peter EÃ¶tvÃ¶s, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Smolka, David Lang, and Frank Zappa, Svoboda has premiered over 400 works for trombone at major festivals throughout the world.â€¨â€¨
Mike Svoboda returned to composition only after ending his work with Stockhausen and has since received commissions, mostly for works spanning an entire concert, from festivals and opera houses such as the ECLAT festival Stuttgart, The State Opera Hannover, The National Theater Mannheim and the State Opera in Stuttgart. Major festivals have invited him to be artist or composer-in-residence. Often involved in his works as a soloist or with his own Mike Svoboda Ensemble, he composes across the borders between popular and classical music, high culture and entertainment, combining - through the use of text and various musical styles - both traditional and avant-garde.
The Museum Concert Series is underwritten by a grant from the Myra Foundation, with support from the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes a great nation deserves great art, with additional contributions from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, General Mills Foundation, and Land Oâ€™Lakes Foundation. Committed classical music lovers also contribute an additional $50 on top of their season ticket to become sponsors who share in the cost of bringing great music to the community. The final concert in this yearâ€™s Series will be the vocal ensemble, Tapestry, on March 22.
Tickets for the Concert Series are available by subscription to the series, or available for single concerts at the door or in advance at the North Dakota Museum of Art. Non-member tickets: $70 for the season, $15 per concert at the door. Memberâ€™s tickets: $60 for the season, $13 per concert at the door. Student and military tickets are $20 for the season, $5 per concert at the door. Children middle school and under are admitted free. |Webcast of Annular Solar Eclipse in Jakarta|
Two UND professors, Timothy Young (physics) and Ronald Marsh (computer science), will travel to Indonesia to broadcast a live webcast of the Jan. 26 annular solar eclipse. This will be the 12th webcast that this team has produced and provided to the world via the World Wide Web.
The narrow path of this eclipse begins in the South Atlantic Ocean traversing the Indian Ocean and ends over Indonesia. The only land in the path is Indonesia where the UND eclipse team will be located (Java or Sumatra).
The UND eclipse team will transmit the annular solar eclipse live with multicast technology and will have a chat room where anyone can share the experience with viewers from around the world. |"Supercomputing in Plain English" video course begins Jan. 27|
The Computational Research Center is hosting a connection site for the "Supercomputing in Plain English" online video course being offered by the OU Supercomputing Center for Education.
Classes are held every Tuesday in 371 Upson II. Seating is limited to 10 to 12 people. No registration is required. The course is open to faculty, graduate students, and staff.

|Kathleen Coudle King to be honored at An Evening with the Arts|
The North Valley Arts Council (NoVAC) invites you to attend An Evening with the Arts, a celebration of the arts community, Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the First National Bank Building, 322 DeMers Ave., downtown Grand Forks. At the event, we will thank the community for contributing time, resources and talent to the arts, celebrate another successful year of service, and hold NoVACâ€™s annual meeting.
An Evening with the Arts will feature the presentation of NoVACâ€™s fourth annual Arts Awards and â€œThe Grand Picture,â€ a silent art auction of artwork created by local artists.
The 2009 Annual Arts Awards will be presented to honor exceptional artists and arts supporters in our community. NoVAC initiated the awards in 2006 to honor those individuals who most actively produce quality art, and to show appreciation for members of the community who support the production of art through their volunteerism, financial contributions, purchase of art, and attendance at arts events.
The 2009 award recipients are:
* Kathleen Coudle King, who will receive the Artist of the Year award. This award recognizes extraordinary artistic achievement with a gift of $1,000, underwritten by the Grand Forks Herald. King is a playwright and co-founder of the North Dakota Playwrightsâ€™ Co-op. She is also a fiction writer, essayist and screenwriter. She has written works that will be performed at First Night Greater Grand Forks and has written "Companeras," a play about political prisoners in Uruguay based on Elizabeth Hampstenâ€™s translated testimonies. She has organized summer community writing workshops and film camps, teaches in the UND English department, and serves as administrative coordinator for the UND Writers Conference.
* Tamar Read, who will receive an Individual Support of the Arts award in recognition of her extraordinary support of area arts organizations and artists.
* Dakota Harvest Bakers, which will receive a Corporate Support of the Arts award in recognition of its extraordinary support of the arts.
* Benjamin Klipfel, who will receive an Outstanding Achievement Award for his extraordinary dedication to the arts in Greater Grand Forks.
Previous award recipients include: Artist of the Year Michael Blake (2008), Job Christenson (2007) and Adam Kemp (2006); Individual Support of the Arts: Jean Holland (2008), Bruce Gjovig (2007) and Tom Edwards and Jackie McElroy Edwards (2006); Corporate Support of the Arts: Happy Harryâ€™s Bottle Shops (2008), Sanders 1907 (2007) and Hugoâ€™s (2006); and Outstanding Achievement: Laurel Reuter (2008), Lee Barnum (2007) and the late Carol Graham (2006).
A silent auction fundraiser to benefit NoVAC programming will feature original artwork by local artists, many of whom have rarely shown their work. This will be an opportunity to purchase paintings, sculpture, and other unique objects dâ€™art created by local and regional artists at reasonable prices. Artists included in the auction include Amy Uthus, Jackie Uthus, Mary Haustad, Diane Paulson, Mark Larson, Bonnie Sobolik and many others.

|Andrew Millington presents ESSP spring colloquium|
Andrew Millington, professor of geography at Texas A&M University, will present "Deforestation in South America: The Influence of Coca Cultivation and Antinarcotics Policies on Forest Fragmentation and Deforestation Rates" at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 210 Clifford Hall Auditorium. Dr. Millington's research focuses on the impacts of human and institutional agents on spatio-temporal patterns of land use and land cover change, and the impacts of land use and land cover change on biological phenomena. He uses hybrid methodologies from GIScience, environmental science, ecology and social science to reseach these phenomena.

The Office of Instructional Development is sponsoring a free "Creating Significant Learning through Integrated Course Design" workshop Thursday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon in the River Valley Room, Memorial Union.
Individuals or teams from departments will want to attend if:
â—¦ you are creating a new course (graduate, undergraduate, non-degree) delivered in any format (distance, online, on campus or a mixed delivery). The workshop can serve as a first step for those applying for summer funding through a Summer Instructional Development Professorship (information at http://www.und.edu/dept/oid/
â—¦ you need to standardize course outcomes, across on campus sections or between distance and on campus sections: this would provide an opportunity for several faculty as a team to determine course objectives/ learning outcomes and work on assignments and assessments.
â—¦ you need to create a new course or rework an existing course for the ES program (perhaps a capstone or advanced communications course or a course that meets the new diversity requirement). The workshop starts with the desired learning outcome and assists teachers in figuring out how best to create a course that fosters student achievement of those outcomes.
â—¦ you need sites for the collection of meaningful assessment data in your course or program. The workshop focuses on genuine assessment of student learning and could serve as a precursor to assessment retreat funding (available from the provostâ€™s office).
â—¦ you are a graduate student who would appreciate the rare opportunity to focus on your development as current and/or future teacher.
The workshop will be conducted by Stewart Ross, founding director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Minnesota State Mankato (honored by the Carnegie Foundation as a CASTL Leadership College).

|Museum benefit dinner is Feb. 7; reservations now available |
The 18th annual North Dakota Museum of Art Gala Benefit Dinner and Silent Art Auction will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Join us for a White Nights Celebration among family, friends, and supporters of the North Dakota Museum of Art. We want to emphasize the importance of keeping the lights bright at the Museum, so we've moved White Nights from St. Petersburg, where the sun doesn't set in summer, to Grand Forks, where winter nights are dazzling.
The Benefit Dinner, which is both a prominent social event and successful fundraiser for the Museum, will be held in the elegant galleries of the North Dakota Museum of Art. Dress is black tie optional, and valet service is provided. Reservations are $95 per person. The tables seat eight and arrangements can be made for parties to be seated together.
This yearâ€™s honorary chairs are Robert and Marcia Kelley. Mike Jacobs and Suezette Bieri, along with Al Boucher and Thomasine Heitkamp, are co-chairing the planning committee. This year over 50 pieces from regional, national, and international artists are for sale. The auction includes work by emerging artists as well as contemporary artisans. The pieces will be circulated throughout the dinner by walking easels. All artistsâ€™ reserve bids begin at $100.
This yearâ€™s auction includes work by Zhimin Guan, Helge Ederstrom, Mariah Masilko, Melanie Rocan, Punchgut, Sarah Hultin, Vivienne Morgan, William Harbort, Walter Piehl, Kathryn Lipke, Adam Kemp, Guillermo Guardia, Lena McGrath Welker, Morgan Owens, Daniel Sharbono, Ryan Frates, Jeff Amann, and many others. Several artists have donated all proceeds from the sale of their work to the Museum as they have in the past. The artwork will be on display in Museumâ€™s mezzanine gallery through the night of the auction. It is also available online at ndmoa.com.
A major fundraising component for the auction will be a raffle for a sculpture by Guillermo Guardia. Raffle tickets are now available at the Museum at $25 per ticket. The raffle drawing will be held at the end of the evening.
This yearâ€™s meal will follow the theme of the White Nights celebration with a distinct Russian flavor. Vegetarian meals will be provided with prior request. Fine wines chosen by wine connoisseur Michael McCullough accompany the meal. Jan Heitmann of All Seasons and artist Adam Kemp will design the centerpieces at each of the tables and also special gallery decorations.
Proceeds from dinner reservations, and art and raffle sales are used for programming and exhibitions at the North Dakota Museum of Art. |Canadian Aboriginal Film Festival is Feb. 18-26|
The Department of Indian Studies, in collaboration with the government of Canada, will present a film festival of Canadian Aboriginal films Feb. 18-26. We are fortunate to be able to present 13 films of various lengths by Canadian Aboriginal filmmakers. This event is made possible by the Canadian Consulate in Minneapolis. All films will be shown at the Memorial Union Lecture Bowl and will be followed by discussions.

and we also encourage instructors teaching classes that deal with these subjects to have their students attend.

In a semester when the campus will not experience a Time Out Week, this film series builds on the Indian Studies Association film series in the fall to bring more information about indigenous peoples in North America to the community.

|Freshman Getting Started 2009 is June 1 to July 10|
Freshman Getting Started 2009, an advisement and registration program for new freshmen, will take place June 1 through July 10. All students must have a reservation to attend and all session reservations are scheduled on a first-come first-served basis. Freshman Getting Started 2009 is a two-day program to which new first-year students, admitted for the fall 2009 semester, are invited to come to campus for advisement and registration. Program activities begin on Day One at 8:30 a.m. and include a welcome to the University, housing, financial aid, student account services, student affairs, and general information presentations, along with mathematics placement testing for students. Day Two begins at 8 a.m. and consists of language placement testing, individual academic advisement and registration, and obtaining a parking permit and student ID. There is a separate program for the families of students that runs simultaneously in which they receive information that assists in the adjustments involved in sending a student to college. The program usually concludes around noon on Day Two.

|Proposals sought for second annual Community-University forum|
Are you interested in community entrepreneurship? Are you doing projects with community partners? Would you like to discuss innovative approaches to community issues with rural community members?
If you do, send your ideas for the forum, â€œFocus on Community Entrepreneurship,â€ to be held in Rugby, N.D., March 27-28. Proposals will be accepted from students, staff, faculty, and community members. Presentations on community-based research and community-university collaborative projects, as well as panels and panel ideas, are all welcome. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Feb. 17. Results will be announced by March 2.
A first forum, called â€œGenerating Ideas Through Partnershipsâ€ and held in Grand Forks April 18-19, 2008, gathered 150 participants talking about community arts, community diversity, community ecology, and community-university projects. The program for the second forum, titled â€œFocus on Community Entrepreneurshipâ€ will be shaped by the proposals you and others will submit.
The forums are part of a broader project, Community Connect, coordinated by the UND Center for Community Engagement. Dozens of communities and organizations across the state, as well as UND faculty and students, have been involved in conversations to bridge community-university knowledge and to address community issues. As a result of these conversations, the Community Connect project is now in the stage of launching a Web site and journal.
Your proposals for the forum, â€œFocus on Community Entrepreneurship,â€ should include: name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, submission title, submission type (idea, panel or individual presentation), and abstract (maximum 300 words). Nominations are sought for individuals to be considered for recognition as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor. Included below are the criteria and procedures for the nomination and selection of those to be recognized. Nomination packets are due in the respective deanâ€™s office by Friday, Feb. 27. Nominators must be a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor, full professor, or department chair.
1. Demonstrated achievement across research, teaching, and service with significant national or regional recognition in any one of these missions.
2. Significant professional contributions throughout his/her career. However, the basis for selection of Chester Fritz Professors will be heavily weighted toward oneâ€™s accomplishments at UND.
3. Recognition by University of North Dakota colleagues as a faculty member who has made a valuable contribution to the quality of UNDâ€™s academic programs.
4. Full-time member of the faculty which includes all ranked teaching and research personnel. Department chairs are eligible if he/she is a full-time member of the faculty. (Full-time administrators, e.g., vice-presidents and deans, are not eligible).

As part of its commitment to research development at UND, the Division of Research frequently provides matching funds for proposals to external funding agencies. In order to properly monitor the amounts and sources of matching funds provided for these proposals, principal investigators requesting matching funds for proposals to external funding agencies must complete a "Division of Research Matching Funds Request Form," which can be found on the Division of Research webpage at: http://www.und.edu/dept/research/docs/matchingfundsrequestform.doc .
This form is to be used when requesting matching funds from the vice president for research or research development and compliance. Please note that matching funds will be provided by only one of these offices. All requests for matching funds should be submitted to Research Development and Compliance.
|Public scholarship proposals accepted|
Proposals are being accepted from UND faculty for research and creative activity projects involving public or community partners in North Dakota. The Center for Community Engagement Public Scholarship Fund has been established with the support of the vice president for research. A total of $10,000 is available for projects this year.
Public scholarship, also known as public policy research, action research, community-based research, participatory research, and public interest research, is concerned with addressing community needs by involving public members in research projects and by making research results broadly accessible.
The Public Scholarship Committee encourages multi-disciplinary projects, attention to the particular needs of North Dakota, and the involvement of students. Application forms are downloadable from the Web site of the UND Center for Community Engagement at www.communityengagement.und.edu The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. Feb. 13.
Research Funds are available for:
â€¢ Public scholarship projects of up to $2,500
â€¢ Two or more faculty members from more than one department

â€¢ Projects that can be completed in 12 months
A community partner may be any legal entity, a non-governmental organization (NGO), a non-profit organization, or a community service organization. Community partners must be actively involved in the design of the research project. A letter of commitment from the community partner is required with the application.

|Museum of Art seeks costume jewelry for children's fundraiser|
Each May the North Dakota Museum of Art hosts Antique to Chic, a fundraiser and raffle for the Museum's children's art programs, which include summer art camps, workshops, scholarships and outreach into the local community. We accept any jewelry, costume or otherwise, and accessories such as scarves, belts, hats or purses to sell at this event.
This year Antique to Chic will be held Sunday, May 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Museum. There is no charge and refreshments will be served. The raffle tickets for jewelry donated by local jewelers and artisans will be available before the event. Prices at the sale will range from $1 per item and up.

The U.S. Census Bureau will be testing for various positions throughout the state of North Dakota. These positions will last in duration from five to 10 weeks (with possible additional assignments) up to two years, with some immediate openings and some to begin spring 2009. |Report icy conditions to Facilities Management|
The weather has caused icy conditions on our parking lots, roads, and sidewalks. We will continue to salt and sand to reduce the slipperiness as much as possible. Please report any hazardous conditions to Facilities at 777-2591. There are some things that you can do to help reduce the risk of falling on ice. Here are some helpful hints.
1. Wear boots or overshoes with grip soles. Slick leather or rubber soles on dress shoes are unsafe on ice.
2. Donâ€™t walk with your hands in your pockets. This reduces your balance if you slip on the ice.
3. Take short to medium steps, or shuffle your feet in very icy areas.
4. Donâ€™t carry or swing heavy loads, such as large boxes or cases, which could cause you to lose your balance when walking.
5. When walking, curl your toes under and walk as flatfooted as possible.
6. Donâ€™t step on eneven surfaces. Step well over or avoid curbs with ice on them.
7. Place your full attention on walking. Donâ€™t allow your attention to be divided by getting your keys out of your pocket, digging in your pocketbook for items, etc., while walking on ice.

This study will explore some of the employment issues that may be a concern to people with disabilities. Participants are sought from all sectors of employment from both North Dakota and Minnesota. The study will require two hours of your time filling out a brief survey and participating in a conversational interview. Information will be confidential and retained per the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) standards. This is a voluntary opportunity; however, you will receive a $20 gift certificate to be used at a local store.
This research project is looking for participants with the following criteria:
* employed (full or part-time);
* received at least one medical or psychiatric diagnosis from a medical or mental health professional;
* diagnosis issues currently or may in the future affect work performance;
