UNIVERSITY LETTER LISTS SUMMER SCHEDULE

MUSEUM WILL HOLD SUMMER MUSIC CONCERTS
Original compositions will highlight the North Dakota Museum of Art Summer Music Series, which features an eclectic lineup of jazz, folk songs, ballads, classical guitar, and cowboy songs. Concerts will be held on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. and will run until July 31. There will be no concert July 3.
On July 10, well-known recording artists and composers, guitarist Mike Coates and singer Linda Coates, return to present acoustic, traditional folk music, Elizabethan songs and pop. They will bring with them the young contemporary recording artist Margot Wagner. There will be jazz a little on the wild side on July 17 with Fargo band Filthy McNasty playing their own work. Canadian composer and saxophonist David Hasselfield, whose credits include participating in a performance for Queen Elizabeth II, and composer/pianist Rick Boughton, who has performed with Holly Cole, The Temptations, and Steve Smith, will present their original music on July 24. The final concert for the season will be a return engagement for cowboy poet, singer and songwriter, D.W. Groethe, who appeared in the Museum's Readers Series earlier this year. Groethe, from Montana, will perform on July 31.
The concerts are free and open to the public, and donations are welcome. Receptions will follow the performances. The North Dakota Museum of Art is located on Centennial Drive on the campus of the University of North Dakota. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends. The Museum Caf‚ is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, with lunch served between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER OFFERS MEDIATION SEMINAR
The Conflict Resolution Center is offering a five-day mediation seminar July 16-18 and July 23-25 (Mondays from 1 to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the Memorial Union. Students, faculty and staff may take the training at a reduced cost of $250, compared to off-campus training costs of $875 (or $1,000 in Minneapolis). Fees include instructional materials, daily lunches, beverages, and afternoon snacks. You may also earn credits through the course.
The seminar offers training in active listening and other third- party communication skills, theories of empowerment and recognition to transform conflict, how to mediate, and how to provide the most beneficial third-party intervention, learned optimism and emotional intelligence, and ethics and standards in mediation.

DOCTORAL EXAMINATION SET FOR LACHLAN WHALEN

TRUMPETER ARTURO SANDOVAL HEADLINES SUNDOG JAZZ FEST
Early-bird tickets are now available for the North Dakota Museum of Art's outdoor SunDog Jazz Fest 2001 with headliner Arturo Sandoval, 12-time nominee and four-time Grammy winner.
Opening acts for the internationally recognized trumpet artist are vocal stylist Karrin Allyson from New York City, who has received rave reviews from every major jazz publication; the local, popular Jazz On Tap; and the Minneapolis/St.Paul Hornheads, who perform as the touring band for Prince. SunDog Jazz Fest 2001 will be held Monday, Sept. 3, Labor Day, from noon to 8 p.m. on the University of North Dakota quad across from the North Dakota Museum of Art on Centennial Drive. Mike Blake, percussionist with Jazz On Tap and associate professor of music, will open the day at noon with an informal talk in the Museum about the music that will be performed throughout the day. Various performers will join the discussion.
This is the second outdoor jazz festival organized by the Museum. Last year's inaugural Jazz Festival attracted an enthusiastic audience to hear Joshua Redman and other jazz artists, and Museum Director Laurel Reuter expects a leap in attendance this year as news of the Museum's annual Jazz Festival reaches jazz fans in the Upper Midwest and Canada.
Arturo Sandoval, performer of both classical and Latin jazz, is praised by the London Evening Star as "the sort of virtuoso artist who comes along only once or twice in a generation," and by the New York Post as "possessing some of jazz's greatest chops ..." A prot‚g‚ of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at age 12, and has since become one of the world's most celebrated guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a highly respected classical artist. He was a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. Sandoval has recorded 27 albums with his own group of six, and has appeared on records with many other artists. He was also the subject of an HBO special movie released in November 2000, titled "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story," starring Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan.
"She's hip, she's savvy . . . she makes me forget about the six o-clock news," writes Rex Reed of recording artist Karrin Allyson, of New York/Kansas City. Allyson, a first-rate jazz singer and an accomplished pianist who draws upon her classical training, has recorded six albums and is releasing a new album featuring John Coltrane ballads. Performances abroad include a month-long tour of Brazil, repeat engagements at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Club at Le Meridien in Paris, Pizza on the Park in London, and tours of Japan under the auspices of the Concord Fujitzu and the Monterey Jazz Festivals. She commands a broad repertoire which runs from jazz to blues, pop, samba and French cabaret. The Hornheads have received international acclaim from artists, critics and educators. They have performed and/or recorded with artists including Louie Bellson, Sammy Davis Jr., Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Doc Severinson, Prince and the New Power Generation, and Janet Jackson. Their repertoire includes music of American masters from Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk, to Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Stevie Wonder, as well as their own originals. The Hornheads -- Michael B. Nelson, trombone, euphonium/leader, arranger; Kenni Holmen, tenor/soprano sax, flute, piccolo; Dave Jensen, trumpet, flugelhorn; Kathy Jenson, alto/baritone sax, flute, clarinet; and Steve Strand, lead trumpet, flugelhorn cover a wide spectrum of styles.
Jazz On Tap, a local favorite from Grand Forks, is comprised of guitarist Kris Eylands, bassist Bob Cary, and percussionist Mike Blake. They have had a year of constant performances in the Red River Valley since they performed last summer at the opening of the new Sanders 1907 restaurant in downtown Grand Forks and at the inaugural JAZZ 2000 Festival. This year, Dennis Connelly, from Bismarck, who plays alto saxophone, will be guest artist with Jazz On Tap. Blake is artistic director of this jazz festival as well as last year's jazz fest. He has toured with Bob Hope, performed with Della Reese, Gordon MaCrae, Jack Jones, Vicki Carr, Buddy DeFranco, The Smothers Brothers, Clark Terry, Howard Roberts, and many other musicians of note. Guitarist and composer Kris Eylands, one of the founding members of Jazz On Tap, has degrees in vocal and instrumental music from Mayville State University and a master's degree in music education from UND. He owns and operates Fastrack Recording Studio in Grand Forks where he is currently working on a CD release of his compositions. Eylands has performed with Paul Wertico of the Pat Methany Group, Roy Clark and Don Menza. Cary, another founding member, is currently a television producer/director at the AeroSpace Network at the Odegard School. He has been part of the Valley music scene for more than 20 years, and has performed with the Smothers Brothers, Prudence Johnson, and Dick King and the Classic Swing Band. He has also played with Ruben Alvarez, Gordy Knudtson, and Steve Houghton. Cary was the bassist for Mike And The Monsters, an eight-piece rockin', rhythm and blues band popular throughout the Upper Midwest. The 25-member volunteer committee for SunDog Jazz Fest 2001 is headed by co-chairs Cheryl Gaddie and Alex Reichert. Major corporate sponsors for SunDog Jazz Fest 2001 include the Myra Foundation, WDAZ-TV 8, the High Plains Reader, Northern Lights Public Radio, North Dakota Public Radio/Prairie Public Television, and Subway.

ANNUAL STEAM SHUTDOWN SET FOR AUG. 7, 8
The annual steam shutdown has been scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 7 and 8. Steam heating and cooling will be turned off around 12:01 a.m. Aug. 7, to begin maintenance and repair of the steam distribution system and steam plant equipment. Steam service should be restored during the evening of Aug. 8.
As a result, there will be no hot water in buildings that have steam heated water heaters. Also, steam-run air conditioners in Upson II, Witmer, Nursing, Wilkerson, and Starcher will be shut off for the duration of the steam shutdown. The above dates have been proposed to minimize inconvenience to the University Community. We thank you for your cooperation.

SPACE STUDIES HIRES NEW FACULTY
Three new faculty members have joined the Department of Space Studies at the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. Shanaka DeSilva will serve as professor and department chair, Michael Gaffey as professor, and Eligar Sadeh as assistant professor.
Dr. DeSilva, currently a professor of geology at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, received a B.Sc. in geology in 1982 from the University of Southampton, U.K., and a Ph.D. in geology in 1987 from Open University, U.K.
Dr. Gaffey has taught since 1984 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He earned a B.A. in geology in 1968 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, an M.S. in geology in 1970 from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in earth and planetary sciences in 1974 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.
Dr. Sadeh is currently an instructor at the Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He earned a B.S. in aerospace engineering sciences from the University of Colorado in Boulder, an M.A. in international relations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel in 1994, and a Ph.D. in political science from Colorado State University in 1999.

APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR LEARNING CENTER DIRECTOR
The University of North Dakota is seeking applications for the director of the University Learning Center. The director is responsible for leadership, coordination and administration of the Center. The director employs, supervises and evaluates the center staff, including full- and part-time staff and the student workers; provides leadership for the development of the academic skills assistance programs; oversees the tutoring program; evaluates overall program effectiveness; consults with faculty and administrators throughout the University; teaches academic skills courses; conducts workshops and outreach programs; and manages the center budget.
This position requires a master's degree in an appropriate discipline for the delivery of academic skill development and tutoring. Prefer administrative and supervisory experience in a university setting. Desire teaching experience and working with students at a variety of levels. Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating educational programs needed. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Strongly desire direct knowledge of UND programs and procedures.

Lowell Brandner has been named interim director of the Printing Center, effective July 1. He will replace Dic Ganyo, who will retire June 29. Brandner has served as the production coordinator at the Printing Center since 1989.

NEW E-MAIL ADDRESSES WILL CHANGE FORMAT
In order to prepare for a universal naming convention across the state, all new accounts on U-Mail will have a "." dot instead of an "_" underscore between the first and last name (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org). USENET NEWS SERVICE MAY BE DISCONTINUED
The Higher Education Computer Network (HECN) south site is proposing the discontinuation of USENET news service (news.nodak.edu) at the end of the fall 2001 semester. There are several reasons for this proposal:
1.The number of daily connections to the server has declined to an average of under 100 per day as compared to several hundred a few years ago.
2.It is becoming increasingly difficult to find good, free news feeds.
3.We have never had a full-feed of all the USENET news hierarchies. A full feed now runs 30 - 40 GB of articles per day.
4.There are free, web-based USENET news services (such as DejaNews) which offer a full selection of hierarchies and posting privileges.
If you are actively using this news server, please contact the UND Help Center at firstname.lastname@example.org. HECN South would like comments on this proposal by July 1. A final decision will be made at that time and appropriate announcements made.
SOFTWARE LICENSING UNDERGOES CHANGES
There have been a number of changes in software licensing. It's been a regular tornado blowing through our office with all the changes, misinformation, confusion, etc. Unfortunately, the dust has not yet settled. But I will continue to do my best to let you know of issues that will impact you and your users. Following are some changes in software licensing.
Microsoft Office: On May 31, Microsoft's newest Office suite was released. With this release all previous version/edition licenses were no longer available for purchase. This does not mean they cannot be installed, however. Microsoft offers what they call "downgrade rights." This means that with the purchase of the current product license you have the right to install an older version of the same edition. For example, if you purchase Office XP Standard, you are allowed to install Office 2000 Standard or Office 97 Standard instead of the XP edition. This is sometimes necessary when issues of compatibility with collaborators, computer system requirements etc., come into play. Downgrade rights are available on most Microsoft products and are not specifically for the Office suite products.
Corel WordPerfect: As some of you have witnessed, we have had some excitement with the Corel WordPerfect licenses. Because of the lack of accurate information regarding the volume licensing of WordPerfect products, we have taken all products off our listings. At last word, it appears that Corel has pulled all licenses previous to their most current release (Corel WordPerfect 2002) from sale. Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 and Corel WordPerfect Office Standard 2000/9 are no longer available through software licensing. The Macintosh version was pulled some time ago. Corel products do not have downgrade rights; the version you purchase is the only version you can install. Since the new version, Corel WordPerfect 2002, is substantially higher in price and because of its integrated applications, you may wish to purchase individual copies from the University Bookstore. I believe the price is $109.99. Corel has combined two of their editions into one. They no longer have a separate "standard" edition and a "voice-powered" edition, and they now include Dragon Naturally Speaking into the standard edition. Because the voice-powered portion is now included, the package comes with a set of headphones with which to take advantage of its capabilities. We are still waiting for more information on the changes that Corel has recently made, and hope to again offer the Office 2002 suite under site license. However, there is no guarantee that we will offer it. We recommend purchasing an individual copy until we know more.
ESRI GIS software: We've received several newly updated products, including ArcInfo 8.1, ArcView 8.1 and several extensions including ArcPress, ArcGIS 3D Analyst, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, all for ArcGIS 8x. We have not yet been able to add the most recent additions to our listings, and the 8.1 version is only available for the Windows NT or Windows 2000 operating systems. ESRI licenses, due for renewal July 15, are annually renewable, non- prorated licenses. If you or your department/campus faculty or staff currently have ESRI products installed on their machines, you should renew before July 15. This is especially important for UNIX or NT machines, since the key codes issued to them will expire July 15. If these key codes expire, users will not be able to open the applications or extract their data. ESRI products carry a nominal renewal price of $10, with the exception of Image Analysis which is a separate license pro- rated by the number of users. A current renewal price for Image Analysis will be listed on the price list sometime after June 15. If you do not wish to renew, uninstall this software.
PC-SAS: PC-SAS has changed their billing cycle. Our licenses have always run from July 1 through June 30. This year they have changed the agreement and are moving the renewal dates. The license beginning July 1, 2001 will expire Feb. 28, 2002. There will still be the 90-day grace period, so that should allow the product to function until the end of May 2002. Since most users do not renew their licenses until their codes no longer function, I'm guessing this will push users to upgrade in a more timely manner. With the renewal of PC-SAS this year, users will have a new version to install. Version 8.1 was released a couple months ago, but due to the code issues, this version has not been available to those wishing to reinstall this application. This is where we post news regarding anything that will affect you and your users.

PRAIRIE HERITAGE GARDEN UPDATE
As many of you are aware, the Prairie Heritage Garden is being constructed at the site of the soaring eagle sculpture. This historic garden marks the return to central campus of native tallgrass prairie plants which would have called this region home thousands of years before western settlement.
Planting a native prairie garden is a different process than a typical planting of annual flowers which are only around for one season. This relatively simple process is extremely important and ultimately insures the success of the plantings. Since the bed was sited in late April, we have been working diligently to remove the invasive quack grass. Those of you who are gardeners know that quack has long unseen roots capable of sending its kind fairly long distances. Because of its invasiveness and the fact that it is an exotic species (non-indigenous to our region), quack isn't welcome in a prairie garden. We could have used chemicals to remove the quack with marginal success, but chose instead to dig it out by hand (which we are now doing for the third time). This stage will soon be complete. Next we will add amendments to enrich the soil. We should begin within the next week to bring native prairie flowers and grasses into the garden. This will be done over the coming weeks (skipping the hottest weeks) through the fall season. By next summer, we should see the beginning of prairie splendor. It should take three to five years for the garden to become established and look mature.
The garden is being initiated through the commitment of volunteer students, staff and faculty, with support from UND Facilities/Landscaping. Horticultural designer Kathleen Brokke (Integrated Studies/Women Studies) is designing the garden in keeping with the beautiful soaring eagle sculpture. Plants are coming from varieties indigenous to the Red River Valley region. Many are being relocated from the planting at Columbia and DeMers; others are from private collections of gardeners in the region.
Please feel free to ask questions and give support to the volunteers who are present. If you are interested and available, we may even have an extra shovel when the garden work is in process. We hope to have signs up in the coming weeks to allow identification of many of the plants. If you would like to assist in any way, please call Glinda Crawford at 777-3750. -

SUMMER PARKING REGULATIONS IN EFFECT
Summer parking regulations are in effect through Aug. 15. You may park in any lot with any valid permit except the Airport, Memorial Union/Swanson, Upson, Twamley, and Wilkerson lots. You must have an A zone permit to park in these lots. Meters, time zones, service vehicle, handicapped zones and no-parking zones are still monitored and regular rules apply. STATE MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT CLARIFIED
Per House Bill 1197 and effective April 18, in-state mileage reimbursement rates for personal car mileage were increased from 25 cents per mile to 31 cents per mile for each mile actually and necessarily traveled in the performance of official duty when such travel is by motor vehicle, or 27 cents per mile if the travel is by truck, the use of which is required by the employing entity. Out-of-state mileage rates remained the same.
In addition, if only one person engages in such travel in a motor vehicle exceeding any geographical point 300 miles beyond the borders of this state (previously 150 miles), reimbursement is limited to 18 cents per mile for miles driven in excess of 600 miles of round trip out-of-state travel. Please not that the in-state mileage rate applies to all mileage incurred within North Dakota and for mileage within the first 300 miles from the North Dakota border. The out-of-state mileage rate applies to miles traveled beyond 300 miles from the North Dakota border.

BOOKSTORE CHANGES HOURS
Effective immediately, the University Bookstore will be open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Starting Aug. 13, the hours will be extended to Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Effective July 1, Accounting Services will no longer required that a food purchase approval form be submitted to our office. The food purchase approval form and the catering agreement form have been combined. Dining Services will obtain all required information from the department at the time the catering agreement form is completed. Departments are encouraged to review all food purchase policies on the Accounting Services web site at www.und.edu/dept/accounts. Though the procedure has changed, the policies have not.
After July 1, the new catering agreement form and helpful information for booking a campus catering event will be available online at www.dining.und.edu/catering.html. If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Weber, Dining Services, 777-2256, or Steve Reller, Accounting Services, 777- 2772.

SPECIAL DENIM DAY RAISES $393
The special Denim Day held community-wide on May 18 to benefit our local Salvation Army chapter raised $393 from the University. Thank you for your participation.

MALE SMOKERS SOUGHT FOR MEMORY STUDY
Male participants are sought for a study on nicotine and memory being conducted in the Psychology Department by Dimitri Poltavski, a graduate student in psychology. You must be a smoker who has smoked at least 10 cigarettes per day for the previous six months, and be between 18 and 35 years old to participate. If you are interested, please call 780-8001. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR CHARITY GOLF EVENT
Participants are sought for a charity golf tournament in support of United Way Friday, June 29, at Valley Golf Course in East Grand Forks. Registration begins at 11 a.m.; the tournament, a four-person scramble, begins at noon. The cost is $60 and includes green fees for 18 holes, golf cart, awards, and a barbecue dinner. To register, call Doug Andring at 780-2227, or register at the course before the tournament. Donations are welcome; the tournament is sponsored by Dayton's.
